I am "Out Of The Loop" on Assault Rifles.
I have been "Considering" (without Penny's Knowledge) on saving my allowance for a AR-15 type rifle.
The U.S Military M4 (?) Carbine looks ideal. What is the civilian model ?
What are the manufactures that offer complete rifles.
Which ones should my dreams avoid ?
Thanks,
Jimmy

If you're looking for basic, mil-spec, rock solid reliable, get a Colt 6920. It's the civilian M4, identical except for a 16" barrel instead of the 14.5", and semi-auto rather than select-fire. It's the standard bearer for a reason, and the prices right now are the best they've been in years; you can find them for about $850.

If you're looking to spend a little less, the only one I'd consider is a S&W M&P Sport; they're excellent entry-level ARs good for most reasonable use.

If you're considering spending more, a BCM or Daniel Defense with a mid-length gas system, outfitted to your liking, would be what I'd do.

You can buy a rifle or kit from palmetto state armory for 499 some with free shipping , some cover your wants with a chrome bore but with 16" barrel . Assembly takes minor tools you may be able to borrow locally and 1/2hr time . Easy to build . Or build from parts as you can . Shop apex precision or buds or gun broker and AR Parts for matching upper and lower , even blemished models for some like apex are top notch . mant sight ship year on holidays too . Mid a mid length gas system as they run better .

I have built both mine from mixed brand parts .

For an AR on the cheap that will give plenty of fun on the range and can be used for HD a S&W Sport would be my first choice followed by a Del-ton. Up the price range Stag Arms makes nice guns as do Windham Weaponry and Colt. I don't have experience with higher tier/ priced ARs. Good luck in your quest. tom.

Colt LE6920 or the FN 15 Carbine are the close to the M4 as you can get without paying the tax stamp. 16" barrels.

That said there are tons of good AR15s out there. It is a great time to get an AR. There are quality rifles as low as $600 complete.

It's been a few years but I ordered a complete upper (16" hammer forged, chrome lined, mid length gas) from Palmetto state and built the lower myself from a blem. A few months later I ordered a premium 16" carbine upper and built another lower for a Christmas gift for my son. Both have been excellent.
I think it's getting hard to buy a truly bad AR. Also, we're talking civilian use here. To be honest, at my age facing a squad of young, well trained men, using my AR on myself would bring the inevitable to a quicker conclusion.
