Have any of you guys felt a need to change your hand guard on your sport because of heat and replace it with one that has a heat shield ?

I shoot with gloves on. PERIOD. IF the rifle gets hot, the glove will keep the heat from scorching you; it will buy you a second to get your hand clear. I can not tell you how many guys I saw with a barrel burn because they tried to stop a smokin' hot rifle from falling over. Simple mistake, and a nasty cauterized burn, and plenty of blister.
Also, should anything go wrong; let's say you get a squib or a bullet comes apart in barrel, and you hit the trigger again......... the glove WILL lessen any damage to the hand that is holding that barrel. Simple leather palmed nylon backed mechanics' gloves are perfect.

This said, I have had some barrels hot enough that the plastic started stinking and smoking. Gloves can be a must in some situations.

Heat shields wasn't the primary motivation for the change, but was a positive ancillary benefit. I switched out to MagPul MOE hand guards because they were an ergonomic improvement for me.

How many rounds does it take to get a handguard that hot? Honest question...I'm too cheap to find out on my own.

I have a stock set of 15-Sport hand guards if you want to give it a try. :D

Honestly, I'm curious too. I imagine it would involve a few rapid fire mag dumps to do it.

I went Alpha and Omega with the rifle, and I had like 18 30rnd mags loaded.:D The rifle smoked it's oil after like 4 mag dumps, and the grip was HOT at that point. After 10 mags in a row, I quit. It was too hot to hold with a glove on. The plastic was glue...... but it did not fail. I will say, the rifle cycled well, and after about 20 minutes, it quit glowing!!!!
If I were intent on trying this kind of abuse ever again, I might search out a very high heat compatible oil. The bolt did not stick, but I will tell you; there was NO oil left on the bolt, slide areas. The trigger still has a showing of oil, as did the buffer.

If you are wondering exactly what parts will you kill first doing this kind of stuff??? Gas rings. They tend to fuse together from all the carbon as the oil fails from the heat, and cooks away.

Yea, I changed to MOE hand guards after the first range session. I like the ergonomics of the MOE and the heat shields do help. I also switched to the MOE pistol grip and the MOE butt stock. Magpul makes some good stuff.

rojodiablo pretty much nailed it, 4 mags in 4 minutes or less and you will be burning oil off and feeling the heat. I do a 4 mag dump on any new build I put together for serious use as I feel the heat and stress will show any assembly or parts problems better that slow fire.

Official rates of fire per TM are:
Semiautomatic - 45 rounds per minute
Burst - 90 rounds per minute
Sustained - 12-15 rounds per minute

WARNING: never leave a round loaded in the chamber after mag dumps of 4 or more mags, the chamber temperature can be high enough to cook off a round in as little as 10 seconds.

Yes I changed mine out the dame day I bought my Sport to a Magpul MOE. One for the heat factor and for a better grip.

My oem stock spent all of one day on the rifle before swapping out
