Did S&W ever put out a 459 with an arched back strap like that on the 39? I've seen pics of what is being called a 459 with the arch but, I can't find any info on it.
I was the one who bought it for the exorbitant price of $67.26. OUCH! This part will be for my 1987-vintage 659 that is "vacationing" at Karl Sokol's farm in West Rutland, VT.
It will be my dedicated 'rail gun' with the aid of a new Stainless Novak's M1913 rail for the 1911. The contours of the 659/5906 dustcover are nearly identical to the 1911. Karl will silver solder the rail onto the dust cover for a permanent conversion.
The arched mainspring housing will figure very prominently in the modernization of this wonderful piece of 'American Steel'. The stock S&W grip panels were given the ROBAR stippling treatment with saving the S&W seal on each panel.
A few months back, I sent the slide off to Novaks and had 'Titus' mill of the front sight and dovetail a new Trijicon 1911 sight into the slide, as well as giving a nice 11-degree chamfer to the muzzle. The work was flawless.
I also added a new (old stock) Stainless Exacta-Ace barrel bushing (with the Teflon o-ring) to the front of the slide. Hopefully, it with the aid of the bushing, will give a decent level of accuracy.
The plans for the arched MSH is to have her Cerrakoted in a color that will be matched to matte finished stainless. The entire bottom end of the gun will be bead blasted, whereas the slide will have high-luster brushed flats.
When completed, I'm sure the piece will be one-of-a-kind. The 459/659 guns are Russian T-34 tank tough.
I had been looking for one of these arched MSHs for about one year. Although the price is high, I feel it was a good buy. The only defect from the 459/659 pistols were that the grip angle was akin to pointing a 2X4. The arched MSH helps with pointability.
