Are K Frame Magnas really worth over $150 a set?

Picked up a nice nickeled S&W M15-2 w/ a 2" barrel but she's sporting a pair of S&W combat grips. Want to return her to the original configuration and Ebay only has a bunch of beat up Magnas so I looked elsewhere. A couple of reseller had a few sets that were really nice, but they were $150 and up. Before I shell that kind of money out I'm wondering if they really are worth that much or would I be better off going to the next gun show and see if I can find a set at a better price? Been a while since I looked at S&W grips.

Those look to be a set of Thailand sourced stocks, nice by reputation but not factory.

With a little searching, a nice set of period correct Magna stocks should be in the $50 range. Happy hunting!

IMO, $150 is way too much for a set of K frame non-diamond PC Magna's, which are appropriate for your gun. $50 is about tops in my book.

FYI - Those are not factory Combat stocks. They appear to be target style fingergroove grips made in Thailand.

I see pretty nice ones under $100 all the time. The classifieds on this forum have them often. If I was spending $150 I'd be buying antler/stag grips.

Magnas you can find much cheaper.
Especially if you don't need diamond ones.

I would shop around. $150 seems like a steep price to pay for wood grips. One other option might be to search Altamont grips for magna "replicas." They make a lot of nice wood and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. Here are some on a N-frame 28-2. They are satin rosewood, but I know they stock a lot of walnut options too.

Whatever the beat up grips are selling for you would then be paying a increment over them for a much nicer and more correct set of grips. I'm betting if I ask you a year from now if you have enjoyed having the new grips and the increment mattered to you at this point, you probably would have gotten the difference in enjoyment.

FYI - The 2" model 15's were the only adjustable sight K frames that came with PC (plain clothes) Magna stocks. That style typically came on model 10's and had rounded sides at the butt. The top pair are N frame Magna's (non-PC).

Correct stocks for your gun are shown here (bottom right).

The OP did not post the s/n of his Model 15-2, so we don't know the approx. date of manufacture. However, a 15-2 should have shipped with diamond center magna stocks. Here is the revolver that my wife's grandfather carried on a daily basis...it's an original 15-2 (K509199,1962) and is wearing checkered diamond magna stocks. According to the SCSW 4th Ed., K-frame diamond center checkered square butt magna stocks were used 1953-1967. Even Plain Clothes stocks were diamond center checkered square butt, 1952-1967. The diamond was eliminated around 1968 with the Model 15-3. I won't claim to be an expert on these stocks, I'm just going by what I have and by the SCSW 4th Ed. Please correct and educate me if I'm mistaken.

Maybe; if in great shape and they have your Serial Number stamped, and you really needed them.

$150.00 for near perfect diamond K magnas is about right after tax/shipping but if you give it time you could find them on the forum cheaper.

Finding magnas without any missing wood by the horn, checking not flattened or scratched,and no dents anywhere can take some time. So when you need and see a set on ebay unless you get lucky it will be sought after by others.

If you really get lucky there will not be any numbers on the back.
Some collectors really like that on great condition guns.
