Here is my Bushmaster M4 A3 Mini-Y comp. An Aimpoint Comp M4 (brought from the sandbox) is my preferred optic. Anti-walk pins, Chip Mccormick trigger, six position stock, Local made tac-latch, Fore grip, mag-pul rear flip sight, single point sling and patrol sling set-ups, and a widemouth trigger guard make up this rifle. H&K mags are heavy, but they work flawlessly.

I have a couple 1980's Colts, but prefer my Bushmaster. Its set up with a Burris 2x7 scope in Burris Tac rings, with a Burris fastfire holographic sight mounted on the rear scope ring. Good combo for distance and close range speed. A Streamlight weapons light, combat sling, and rubber recoil pad round out the package.

Sprefix ... How do you like the stick shift up front? I tried one on my Bushmaster M4 but couldn't get used to it, and went back to the stock fore end grip. It just felt "in the way" ...

I got it on a whim. It took a little while, but I like the natural positioning of the hand and wrist while using it. In truth, I could go with or with-out it. As I get more weight sensitive with my guns, extras seem to lose their importance and get taken off.

Love the AR family! Here is my SIG M400 in a very basic format - really "stock" save a simple 2-point sling and a Surefire G3 (sadly out of print now, I believe) in a Viking Tactics mount.

Also shown is a grab-bag handy to the carbine with extra magazines and other goodies; this bag is from US Peacekeeper.

To each his own, but....

I've seen people go WAY overboard when it comes to hanging stuff off of a rifle or handgun. To me, the less the better. Why turn a manuverable piece of equipment into something heavy and cumbersome...lot to mention all of the logistics for that gear.

IMHO less is better, especially in the field. Remember the old maxim "The more you complicate the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain..."

My full-size AR is as-issued for service rifle matches, but my carbine isn't. Still kept it simple though.

Here's my Armalite to which I have added a Nikon P-223 3-9x40 scope, Yankee Hill Machine free-float quad rail, Harris bipod, Hogue grip, and a DPM accurizing wedge.

I thought the HK mags had fallen out favor - springs wearing out quickly and HK only selling whole mags as a replacement... Did not seem to be a myth. The mags in my 45 USP lost tension was being kept loaded. Curiously my cheapo promags did not.

The PMags and newer tan follower "GI" mags are what seem most common here and plenty of older GI mags with various followers. The cool kids have 60 and 100 rd Surefire mags. A few Lancer... Tangodown...Troy...whatnot mags are also to be seen. The truly frugal use 20rd Thermolds bought by the bucket full.

The feed lips of some variants of GI type mags seem to spread and go bad if left loaded. The covers for Pmags are supposed to prevent this.

HK has served me well with none of the issues mentioned. I have several old aluminum G.I. mags that keep on running also. Surefire takes more effort to carry than I want to put out. I like the Thermolds also. I don't use them in Cold weather though. HK does seem to be a pain to deal with if issues arise. If the mags go south, I'll get Wolff springs and not look back.

Here is my Noveske Rogue Hunter wearing the same optic:

I have added a bipod but don't have new pictures.

I believe it was Ed Heineman (sp?), one of the designers of the A4 Douglas Skyhawk (and the AD "Spad") who said that while working on the Skyhawk his goal was to "simplify and add lightness".

A good trigger helps a lot and obviously doesn't add anything in the way of weight; a very compact optic of choice helps even younger shooters; a LW barrel cuts ounces; and there is a lot to be said for a light (even though they kludge up the balance of the piece). Less is more.
