...........I think most of us of a certain age, look for ways to improve our ability to see the sights clearer on defensive handguns.

I have long been fascinated by the concept of the Guttersnipe sights and while I have never had the privilege of shooting with them, I think there may be some merit in the concept.

I decided to try the color concept on the rear sight trough of the model 649 I carry daily. Have not been to the range to test it yet but I have hopes of it making sight acquisition better and maybe quicker.

Maybe be sacrilegious to some, but worth a look to see if does produce improvement.

Tony,

I don't know how it will work out, but I am hopeful that you will see an improvement.

And, as always, I lust after those stag stocks ;)

I noticed that you have already put a brass dot (?) or night sight on that 649. Did it bring some positive results? I have heard rumors that the Big Dot nightsite has a white ring around the tube and it helps some too.

Please let us know if it helps when you hit the range.

Another trick for stainless guns is to blacken the face of the rear sight notch. Birchwood-Casey makes paint pens you can find at Midway, Brownells, etc. for this purpose. You want to use the flat, not gloss, black version for this.

Scott the gold bead/post, along with some other work, was done by Cylinder and Slide a few years ago and it was a great benefit.

I am hoping the color will enhance that improvement.

JSR I always think about that John Wayne movie where his sidekick could not use a handgun so he carried a small double barrel in a holster.

Hope I don't ever get that bad.

Mississippi in El Dorado, played by James Caan

Lawandorder, interesting site option, thanks for the idea to consider !

Caan did it because he wasn't a very good shot IIRC.

I on the other hand think that there is no sound quite like the sound of pumping my short barreled 870 in a darkened room to bring the small hairs on the back of an intruders neck to attention. :D

PS: For those that sleep on the second floor, Harbor Freight sells a battery powered motion driveway alarm that on its loudest setting will wake the dead. Placed strategically on the stairs from the first floor gives one ample time to reach said 870 before the top step is reached. Cost is something like $20. Well worth it...
