At times I wonder just HOW DEAF most shooters are

Best I can gather it is shooting quietly with a 22 & the only way you can do this is if it doesn't go off. I can peal a slice of cheese real slow and cant hear it myself in one end of the house & the dogs can hear from the outside when you open the wrapper. My ears are still ringing.

Got it, thanks. Now I'm singing off before I really make a fool of myself. Night all.

Alpo started this don't blame it on me. He has ears like my mother--rest her soul.

Never heard it called "peeling the cheese" before but I catch your drift. I'm sure the dogs do too. :D:eek::D

I don't know what y'all mean by "peeling the cheese", but I understood it as taking the wrapper of the Kraft Single.

Worthless can hear that from the back fence.

Randomly on the subject :

Anything will be loud from a 2in bbl revolver.

From a 20in or longer rifle , a .22short is a lot quieter than a .22lr ( and yes, I read that article ).

A .22CB from a rifle sounds similar to a air rifle.

From a +/- 6in revolver , CCI brand CB's are pretty quiet, while Rem brand CB's are close to a .22lr. Both sound the same from 20in rifle.

The really freaky quiet thing was firing .32S&W ( not Long ) from a 7.5in .32Mag revolver. If I hadn't heard the thunk of the bullet impacting , I would have had to check for a stuck bullet.

I've used the Colibri and they're very quiet even out of a S&W Model 17.
I've hunted quite a bit over the years but never with hearing protection. I also worked in noisy machine rooms but usually wore muffs. I have hearing loss in both ears now and have one hearing aid for my left ear but rarely use it. My insurance would only cover one or I'd have gotten two.
The VA has decided my loss isn't service related but does pay me a small amount for tinnitus they decided was.
I always do wear muffs though when target shooting even with a 22.

After several years of my wife telling me I was deaf, I finally went to a good ENT for a complete ear exam and hearing test. I was sure that I had hearing loss attributed to shooting. I've always doubled up with custom-fit ear plugs, and the best electronic muffs I could find (I own Peltor and Pro Ears).

After a complete test, the doctor assured me that what hearing loss was completely age related; I'm 67. He told me that my setup was correct, and to keep on using it. He did set me up for an annual exam, and that I had a baseline established to determine if further hearing loss would be age or shooting related.

I could probably start with hearing aids, but he said that any gain from aids would be minimal for now.

He's also a shooter, and ask me for my ear plug maker. I had her business card, and gladly helped.

I started working for a custom gunshop while attending UNR in 1958. It was my job to take all rifles that needed sighting in to the range on Sunday morning. Sometimes I had 10 to 12 rifles to shoot. About a year into this routine I was complaining about headaches after one of those sight-in sessions. A customer who was a hardrock miner brought me the first set of ear muffs that I had ever seen. The miners used them while operating air powered equipment in the mine drifts. That really helped and when I added rubber ear plugs under the muffs that helped even more. BUT, the damage was done. I now have only about 10% hearing in my left ear which was turned towards the muzzle blast. My right ear still has about 75/80 % left. I could add a hearing aid to the right ear, but the left ear is beyond help. We oft grow smart too late. .....

I have 3 inside small dogs & when they act right they get a small amount of cheese for a treat I peel out of a wrapper. Cutting the cheese has something to do with vegetables I think. I like your posts. And that is weird--They really are Kraft singles.:D RUSTY1953 is probably a party animal.:D My wife tells me I am deaf but I don't think it is from shooting 22s.

When in the navy I worked in the ship's engine rooms, pump rooms, generator rooms and occasionally would get treated from the muzzle blast and concussion from the ships 5"54 mounts. Then started working for a public utility generating eletricity being around huge generators, boiler feed pumps, and other pieces of electrical generating equipment. While at the ranges I used to frequent I always wore my ear muffs. Then transferred to a liquified natural gas facility. When going into the compressor house starting up and while running a 6000 horse power gas turbine I don't care what you say the company furnished ear protection was not adaquate to protect your hearing. Instead I bought what I thought was the best hearing protection I could find. 30db was what my ear muffs were rated at. The company stuff had no rating as far as I could tell. I was always getting chewed out for using non company hearing protection. Sufficed to say all of my high frequency hearing is gone and I have to wear an hearing aid in my right ear. Note that all my hearing loss happened over a period of decades. Frank

Hearing check is part of annual physical from employer. While probably less than when a youngster , is still well within "normal" .

My wife always is telling me I'm going deaf from shooting because I never hear her when she's talking to me.:D I just choose not to listen to her sometimes.;)

But yes, my hearing is going. Back in the mid 60's we never heard of hearing protection when shooting daddy's .22, .38 or my 12ga. shotgun. I'm paying for it now.

Just a little bit ago I decided that it was time for all to come in for the night, and shut the door.

Damn dog ignored three whistles and a call.

Opened the fridge and took out a slice of Kraft Single, and started unwrapping it. By the time I was ready to toss the wrapper in the garbage, she was standing in the kitchen next to me. ;)
