felon from CA kidnapped a bank teller at her home and made her drive to the bank and open it early. when she couldn't open the vault(because of the timer) he shot her three times. a thru and thru in both shoulders and one in the chest which hit a large cross she was wearing. fractured her sternum but did not penetrate the cross. the rounds thru the shoulders did not hit bone or anything vital thank goodness. I passerby saw her entering the bank at gun point and called 911. by the time he left the bank it was surrounded by police. this hits close to home for me because my wife is a bank teller also. I'm thinking he didn't do all his homework because the PD is right around the corner from the bank. just glad all turned out as well as it did for the lady victim. another case of things like this can happen in small towns too. my wife and her co-workers are pretty shaken up. lee

That hits close to me. I was a bank guard at times and we had a spree of robberies by a particularly aggressive felon. He hit a lot of banks nearby.

The police and FBI finally cornered him and he pulled over and shot himself, unsuccessfully, as he lived and got a stiff sentence.

I had planned out what to do if possible, if he turned up. Had figured out where and how to engage him with minimum danger to tellers, loan officers, and customers. He disarmed a lot of guards, inc. off - duty cops. I think a lot just got casual and careless.

I hope this teller will be alright and that the bandit gets a stiff sentence. I think it's a shame that he didn't get a fatal dose of buckshot.

There's a retail store robber on the news this week. He's hit several stores and is pretty mean. He hit one clerk with his gun.

I think it's a shame he can't be executed for this crime. When you shoot a helpless victim in the chest, and the only reason she survives is because a cross stopped the bullet, you clearly intended to kill her...and IMO you need to die for that.

The biggest problem with capital punishment in this country is that we don't use it often enough.

FBI says she is OK. Air lifted to Memphica. Coming home soon. Wonder what kind of story he used to get in her house or to get her to leave with him?

Some years ago here a bank robber got the money, leaped over the counter, and shot a teller to death for no clear reason at all.

Fortunately those are very rare; but bank policy be damned, if I had that job or clerked in a convenience store (I prefer the term "stop-and-rob") I would be armed.

At the large branches, tellers and staff are instructed not to resist or impede the robber or robbers, to just get them in and out. The guards, even if armed, are told basically the same.

Doing a bank robbery really needs at least a three man crew - crowd control, getaway driver, and vault man. Sometimes you put a girlfriend with a clean record in a crash car as follow up. A professional crew like that just wants in and out. The lone wolf types are probably more likely to start shooting.

this guy must have followed her home at some time. he kidnapped her at gunpoint as she was leaving for work. my wife just read that part on facebook. good thing he didn't recon the PD first. lee

We had a similar incident many years ago at a steak house that was here at the time. Three men went in at closing time and robbed it and after everyone totally complied with what they were told they still shot them. They even came back and shot one girl the second time to make sure she was dead but she wasn't and she didn't die later. She was and is a close friend of our family. It has caused her major health problems but she is still going strong. The perps fled to Maryland and were finally extradited back here for trial and I still can't believe they didn't get the death penalty.

Back before FDIC and insurance, banks took a more hard core attitude toward robbery.

I recall an old bank in a section of Pittsburgh. There was a mezzanine level where the officers offices were located and guards stationed. There might have been one guy on the business floor, but the last manager told me that back when, there were two guys on the mezz level with Winchester 1892s.

I also recall a buddy and I looking at an old tellers cage (on the sidewalk while the bank was being remodeled-the rest had been hauled off) of a old small town bank. We couldn't figure out what the one item was, a shelf (below the cash drawer) that when pushed forward, opened a concealed flap on the front of the cage. One of the old employees (I think he was the President/manager) told us that when he started at the bank, there was a sawed off double barrel on that shelf. The wire we noticed went to the triggers. If the teller was being robbed, pushing the shelf forward opened the concealed flap at about waist level and fired the shotgun.

A real Blessing that the teller survived. In a well publicised shooting incident here in NH an officer was saved by his badge.
Why arent courts tougher on violent criminals? Its a sad bad thing.

Probably hijacked her getting into her car or caught her off gaurd answering the knock at the door of a stranger, with a gun in her face.
