Why not buy a CMP Carbine?

And for what it's worth I don't think kahr has a very good customer service rep.

I was getting ready to buy one of the Kahr/AO Mi carbines, but my research showed that they are having some pretty significant quality issues. Also, as Crofoot mentioned, their Customer Service isn't top drawer. I have an old Inland that I've owned for > 12 years, but I am seriously considering a CMP M1 carbine and 5k rounds of ammo. Very decent prices for both.

Best of luck,

Dave

You'll pay just as much for an AO M1 carbine as you would - pre election - for a mid quality AR, and get something less useful. Reliable mags are a bit of a problem to come by, and ammunition supplies aren't all that they could be.

Aside from that, you'll find that not all the parts from an AO will apparently interchange with a GI carbine, making Kahr the sole source for replacements in some cases.

I bought an Iver Johnson that was all surplus GI except for the commercial receiver. I honestly trusted mid 80s IJ QC more than I do that at AO.

Absolutely, why buy a repop carbine when you can buy an original? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I bought an AO Thompson 1927-A1 last year and had some issues. The 1st thing I noticed was the stock was cracked. Then I found the 50 round drum was dented and wouldn't feed, keep in mind a 50 rnd drum is $270+ but I did buy it as a package deal. After contacting Kahr they rushed me a stock and 50 rd drum. After my 1st range session I noticed my rear sight was loose. THANKFULLY it was folded down because ALL the screws had backed out and were only holding on by a couple threads because the sight kept them from backing out further.

Now that everything seems ok I'm happy with the gun BUT it surely makes me wonder about Kahr and AO's build and final inspection process.

Anyone like them ?
Nobody I know. You'd be well served to go back and re-read every reply before mine; they're spot on.

-The CMP is your best option for a carbine. You're close enough that could drive down to the North Store. All the info is here:

WARNING: Carbines are addictive (maybe not so much with an A-O). They're great fun to shoot and it's a superb design. It helped win WWII and is a credit to American manufacturing, with over 6 million produced in about 3 years. Plan on reloading (when you can find components). Every American who appreciates firearms should own at least one M1 carbine and you should have it out when you watch a WWII movie!

I like mine.
It is accurate and reliable.
I haven't had a single problem or issue with it.
It's funny all the people who say "don't buy it", don't actually have one.

The Auto Ordnance website shows their standard carbine listing for $899. In addition, parts are not interchangeable with G.I. carbines, so if Auto Ordnance goes out of business and you need parts, they may be hard or impossible to find. On the other hand, CMP lists G.I. carbines at $415 and they are the real thing rather than a copy. IMHO there isn't much more to consider.
