B-32 Dominator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I was reading a book on Japanese naval fighter aces, and some attacked this plane over Tokyo after Japan had agreed to surrender. It was a case of sour grapes over Japan losing the war, and wanting to strike a last blow.

So, I looked up the plane, which was new to me.

Some flew combat missions, although it arrived so late in the war that it never achieved fame.

Still, worth a look if you like such things. It's real significance is probably just that it was evidently the last US aircraft attacked by Jap fighters.

IIRC the B-32 was developed as a back up/alternate to the B-29, much the same way the B-24 was developed as a back up/alternate to the B-17. The last major bombing mission against Japan was a B-32 unit, they were about 100-200 miles from the target when they received the word to abort as the Japanese had just surrendered.

Wikipedia seems to do a great job with all the little known fighters and bombers. I'm always finding some I never knew about.

I always thought they were an interesting aircraft. Is a shame none were preserved.

It's a pretty aircraft. I've done some reading on them in the past, and a number of submitted graphics on the Luft '46 website feature B-32s in combat with various advanced German aircraft.
