I was out on the edge of the field yesterday and happened across this little guy.

A baby Eastern Milk Snake. They are great snakes to have around - they eat mice, etc. I only have seen them around on rare occurrences, and they are welcome guests around here.

It was an aggressive little thing, striking at me as I taking photos of it. I used the dollar bill as a size reference.

After the photo shoot, I put the snake in a rock pile along the edge of the woods, hopefully out of harm's way.
I wish it well, and I hope it survives into healthy adulthood.

Like that last picture, wriggler at the ready. Looks a bit like the red rats I find occasionally here. While you were busy with that one I hope the rest of the brood didn't make a beeline for your front door.

I enjoy looking at baby milk shakes. I think the babies enjoy them too! :D

Good find HB. Thanks for not dispatching him. Milks are in the "King Snake" family and therefore will eat other snakes as well as rodents, etc. He's a predator and an easy meal at the same time. He definitely hatched out this spring. You probably caught him trying to score one last meal before shackin' up for the winter.

Hopefully he'll continue to get big and that dollar of yours won't continue to shrink.

I always liked milk snakes. Unfortunately many people confuse them for copper heads. Years ago I worked on an old brick house that had been over run with milk snakes. I thought the electrician was going to have a heart attack when he removed a dual switch wall plate and a 2 foot milk snake came out of the opening. I relocated half a dozen or so to my property.
