Hi guys-I am looking at a 629-1 that measures 4.5 inches from the cylinder face to the end of the barrel. Does that make it a 4 or a 5? The lettering seems to be where it is supposed to live. What am I looking at? Thanks.

That's an oddball length. I've never seen one. In-focus pictures would be helpful. Especially, if there was one showing the end of the barrel. If you could find out the Product Code from the box label, that would help crack the riddle.

barrel mystery...

The lettering seems to be an equal distance (in the middle) front to rear on the barrel, if that helps solve the mystery. Maybe they cut it that way to keep it in the middle(?) I am looking at photos, and conversing with the seller by email. I have asked more questions, so we will see. Is it safe to say that a factory 4 inch is just that-4 inches? I don't ever remember seeing a 5 inch 629 of any vintage(?) What do you all think? Thanks.

The first production 5 inch 629 was the Classic in 1990, and it was a 629-3 with an L-frame style full length underlug.

I have a 629 8-3/8, either a no dash or a -1 (no barrel pin but recessed cylinder) and if it were a 5 incher, the lettering would be centered. Cutting it to 5 inches was my plan until Hamilton Bowen quit working on S&W's. My guess is the seller measured it incorrectly, just to the front of the frame, and rounded that off to the next whole number.

If the seller can send you photos, that would help, especially of the muzzle, and front sight from the top.
