I just got my service pack from Wolf springs last night and was replacing the easier springs to get to on my 4566TSW (recoil spring and hammer spring) when I decided to press down on the barrel hood while the slide is fully forward, i.e. at full lockup. What I found was that I was able to push the barrel down slightly, maybe 1/16" (didn't measure it and it wasn't much in any case). I had to press fairly hard to get the movement started and once that lower position was reached the barrel would not depress any more no matter how much downward pressure I exerted. I retrieved a Sig P220 to compare and could not get ANY downward movement whatsoever. I know, I know apples and oranges but it's all I had. Is this slight movement normal?

I suppose I'll be posting more once I try to replace some of the other springs but that is for another day!

Your barrel hood should not move at all with the slide in battery, ie forward. If it is moving 1/16th of an inch something is wrong.

Is your barrel bushing worn? Regards 18DAI

I don't think so. In battery I can not move the muzzle at all. Very tight at that end.

Nuclearmike is it a replacement barrel? If so, is it the same revision as the slide?

What do the "shoulders" in the top of the frame, where the barrel rests look like?

How about the bottom of the barrel - the lugs that impact the frame? Any peening or missing metal?

I just pulled my 4566, TDM prefix and I cant budge the barrel hood when its in battery. I'll check my other two tonight but I'm certain they don't move either.

Hopefully Fastbolt will see your post. Regards 18DAI

FWIW - I recently purchased an NOS 1990 produced 4006, unfired in its original box. Zero wear on this piece inside or out. The barrel hood will depress a similar amount when in battery. My well-used 5906 and low round count 3913 exhibit no movement in this area.

you may notice also when you are pressing down on the barrel hood, that the slide is moving back as well. I have seen it before on S&W autos. I do not think that anything is wrong. try holding your thumb across the
rear of the slide when you are pressing down on the hood. I doubt that
you will be able to move it.

My police trade in 6906 has slight movement in the barrel at the hood. I have had 45's that have had the same. However, my M&P 9c has no movement. I would venture a guess that it is a product of wear and tear, but the gun is still functional and usable. Yes, hold the back of the slide and there is no movement, also if I grip the front of the slide tightly and hold it to the frame, I cannot press on the barrel hood and make it move. I would not worry about it

If you press down on the barrel hood it will depress, but also look at your slide because it's moving back. Put your thumb at the back of the slide and keep the slide forward as you push down on the barrel hood...the barrel shouldn't depress...like JAREDSHS said.

When I hold the back of the slide, no barrel movement. I guess it falls within the specs of okay to use. I will call for a new recoil spring tomorrow as well as two new mag springs. That is about all I can think of to replace right now as routine maintenance.

Got my 4566TSW out and, sure enough, if I press against the back of the side I have zero movement of the barrel hood. I did notice that when I get the downward movement the slide does move rearward ever so slightly.

I'm hoping this is not a big deal as the internals look good. No peening or defects of any kind.
