I don't know why it wasn't done other than maybe an oversight by QC as to my knowledge they should all be staked. I'm saying that almost anyone COULD do it but I'd call S&W customer service to get their blessings first. They may want to have the BCG returned or perhaps the entire rifle???
Although I've never had to remove the key bolts, I have re-staked a few before that appeared lightly struck and used a centerpunch with good results. I've seen a regular carrier key staking tool before but have never felt the need to acquire one.

Did you buy it used or was it possibly new old stock? Smith used loctite in place of staking on their first few production runs of rifles and learned the hard way to not try and reinvent the wheel.

It was a dealer selling out. No papers or nothing. Just handed me the gun for 800 bucks maybe 15 Yrs ago.

OK then yours is loctited. Those first few production runs looked good but if you shot them enough the shortcuts bit you in the butt.

My wife owns one of the first year M&P-15's. The only mags that drop free are Vietnam era 20rd Colt mags. Not an issue as we have plenty.

By the way, first year production was 2006.

That's about right. Bought it when I was ccs racing. Til 07 or so. Yea that's about right then
