That's all well and good, especially for a seventeen year old boy with limited options, but personally, if I ever should find myself hiking in bear country then I'll pack my Mossberg 590 Shockwave loaded with Brenneke Black Magic Magnum Slugs.

I like your idea of a shotgun, but I'd prefer something with a longer barrel and more weight...especially if magnum loads are being used!

Think I would settle on a .44 magnum revolver.

Wow. Was in Ennis Montana this past summer trout fishing. Didn't see any bears in that immediate area but saw two up on the Gallatin River in the Big Sky area just inside Yellowstone boundary. Spoke with a couple of locals and both said their woods carry was Glock 10mm. By the way if in Ennis there is a great gun shop there for such a small town.

Great place to visit. Hope to get back again!

Shedhorn is the name of the outfitting/gun shop you visited. They have an awesome selection.

Yes they do! Nice folks there. Stayed at Rainbow Valley Lodge. Great couple who run it with down home atmosphere. Reasonable price and great fly shop on site. They can set you up with great guides, etc. Will stay there again when I return.

Me too, but I find an M2 .50 cal a bit cumbersome on hikes.:D

You prefer a weapon with a longer barrel and more weight than a shotgun, so you settle on a .44 magnum revolver... which has a shorter barrel and weighs less than a shotgun.

Weird.

I carry a m2 garand 300 Winny wif da extended drum clip and sniper scope when in bear country! :)

I live in bear country (as in they wander through town and end up in people's garages and back yards and Pizza restaurants frequently) and I carry a Glock 19

Lots of good information about bear spray in this thread

Also a lot of BS about bear spray in that thread.

Stephen Herrero, author of Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance (Lyons Press 2002) is The recognized expert on bears and bear attacks on the North American continent and if he says you're better off using bear spray than a gun on a wild bear, I'm going to pay attention.

Weird.

Meaning IF I were going to use a shotgun.....which I would not. My choice instead would be a .44 Magnum. Clear enough? :)

I don't walk in the woods. It's stopped me from being attacked by bears 100% of the time.
