Hello all! I'm new to the forum and i have a question. My neighbor approached me the other day and asked me if i was interested in buying a pistol from him. I looked at it and it is a 66-2. I'm not familiar with any S&W pistols. The pistol was issued to a Fire Marshall in Ohio who did not carry it. It was stored for a few years and then my neighbor aquired it. He also has not used it. He wants $600.00 for it. What does the Forum think??

i guess the photo did not get in!!!! will try to get it in there..

finally figured how to attach photo!!

Way too high in price. I recently bought the exact gun in near mint condition for $495.00.

Well, you don't see them for sale all of the time, but I also have to think the asking price is $50.00 - $100.00 to high. Do keep in mind that they are not making any more of them and It does not appear that the price will be dropping anytime soon.

If you really want it and can afford it, I would offer the seller a top bid of $550.00.

Well, you need to buy some S&W revolver and become familiar with them. ;)

This gun will be hard to shoot well, as you are presumably unused to firing snub revolvers, and muzzle blast and flash with Magnum loads may startle you a bit. If it had the four-inch barrel, it'd be a better all-round gun and easier for most to shoot well. Use .38 ammo until you are familiar with the gun and with revolvers in general. It'll recoil less and have much less blast.

But as a specialized carry piece with that level of power, it will do well by you if you take the time and effort to master it. And the short barrel will make it harder for an opponent to twist it from your hand.

I'd offer $500, at most $550, which I think is really too high, although prices on these older S&W revolvers are climbing. Just don't buy it without knowing what to expect from the gun and yourself.

If you are in California, your laws impact prices, and $600 might not be too much. In fact, you may be lucky to have a chance at the gun at all.

hey thanks for the advice. i'll see what he says about possibly lower offer. I have never had a S&W revolver. i would like to make a deal with him on it because i would like to add it to my collection of non-S&W pistols. the gun is in such nice shape....

If you lived in Massachusetts, I wouldn't go above $550.00.

Offer him $450.00 if he counters at $550.00 then tell him you will meet him in the middle at $500.00, which I think is a far price.

If that dosen't work then just sit tight and wait and look, one will come your way.

$550.00 is as low as he will go but he is throwing in 3 full boxes of 125g hollow points. he is my neighbor so i don't want to offend him to bad. i think i'm going to pull the trigger so to speak....

maybe i won't pull the trigger just yet.i'm gonna take your advice "labworm", i'm gonna hold out awhile. i would like it for my collection but i really think from what i've read in the posts that this gun is priced a bit high even with the boxes of hollow points thrown in. who knows he might change his mind later.....

Does it come with the original box and documents such as warranty card, tools, etc?

What do you think a local gun shop would be offering him for that revolver? Think he'd get $550 for it? $500? $400? I think he'd be lucky to get $250 for it in a gun shop, and maybe only towards a purchase in the store. High overhead, operating coosts, yeah I know... FWIW.

No box or paper work just gun(and the hollow points). I checked with my local gun shop and my friend who works there said he would not buy it for that high. Also said he would give $375 on it towards the purchase of a new gun and then try to sell it for $500. So as of now i think i'm gonna wait.....

:)ok maybe i should ask this question. Could i buy this gun ten years from now for $550.00. Because if i do buy this gun it will more than likely get put in the safe and sit there. i would bring it out to target shoot a few times but that's it.:)

Sit tight, all you can afford is $500.00;), let's see if your next post is showing us a picture of your new to you 66. I'm guessing you will. And you are not stealing it.

I'd do $550 for it. Gun looks unfired and the 3 boxes of .357 ammo is worth probably $70. They don't make them anymore. You're not gonna lose any money on it if you decide to sell it. Life is short. If you like he gun, is $50 REALLY a deciding factor? Most of us spend $50 a month on coffee and newspapers in the morning.

Nice Model 66s are bringing decent money - over $500 - on GunBroker.com lately and everyone seems to be seeking snub-noses right now, so they are doing crazy numbers. But by looking around and forcing myself to adhere to a self-imposed spending limit, I've been able to buy a like-new 4" 66-2 with RR, WO, TT, TH and nice Goncalo Alves checkered targets for $519. Just last week, I bought an equally nice 6" 66-2 without the WO, TH and TT for $432. Both guns were on GunBroker and the sellers' descriptions were vague and did nothing to help the guns sell, but more photos I requested showed their condition to be like new.

Right, and the sellers are paying the GB commiss, dealing with FFL,etc.etc.
A lot to be said from the seller's viewpoint for the convenience of of a FTF,not to mention that he's the one trying to sell it-the poster wasn't trying to buy it from him.500 is really very fair to both parties.

I don't think $550 for an unfired 2 1/2" 66 is out of line. I wonder how many members who think the price is too high would sell one they owned any cheaper.

:)First off I would like to thank all the great posts and info. I made a deal with him today. I'm got the pistol and the 3 full boxes of 125g hollow points for $525.00 plus 5 chickens and some produce when it's ready. :)stop laughing!:) I know it's crazy but I have a produce farm and I raise chickens. That's what we do in Northern MN. So the 66-2 is now mine and i'm hoping to put a shell or two thru it Monday. A sound off so to speak for all of our Veterans and servicemen and women. God bless our fallen heros. Enjoy your Memorial day:)

will put up some more photos later
