Have you folks ever heard of Ben Lily?
He was probably the last of the old time Hunter outdoorsmen.
Born in Alabama, raised in Miss . Lived in Tenn, LA, TX, NM, AZ. Hunted some down in Mexico. Buried in Silver City, NM. There is a memorial to him up North of. Silver City.
He mostly only hunted two animals. Cougars and Bears - both black and Grizzlies.
It's been noted that when he moved from an area, usually none of these animals were left.
He was well known in his time. Once in LA he guided Teddy Roosevelt.
Ben was known for his dogs. He never had a family, his dogs were his family. He picked up some legendary Catahoulas while in LA.
As a youngster, he worked some as a blacksmith. After that, he always made his own knives. There is one of his blades at the NRA Whittington Center.
He gave this knife to a Whittington in 1928 on a ranch over in SE AZ.
