I have always admired (lusted for) a 1911 in traditional 45 cal. but have never owned one. What would be the best choice? I like the looks of the Springfields, but S&W has some nice looking ones as well. There are so many to choose from..I'm sure you all have some opinions on this..

Thanks

There is only one original 1911........all the rest are imitations. S&Ws have a non-traditional external extractor, but are still nice firearms.

Ever hear of Wilson Combat?

Cost is no more than a fair used car.

Seriously, the mid range Kimbers are worth an examination. I have owned most brands, and I settled on Kimber in my old age. Not too cheap, and not too expensive. Good used shooters run 600-1200$ most days.

Springfield Range Officer if you want an accurate, bullseye-ready pistol. If you're just gonna blast away at 7 yards, just about anything will do.

I bought a Kimber when they first came out, $599.99. I can shoot a full-sized paper plate at 75 yards. Looks as good now as when new.

I was in the same boat several years ago. As has been stated, there are a heckuva lot of options out there.

You need to ask yourself exactly what it is you want? The original Colt Model 1911 is the Mr. Potato Head of firearms.

What I mean is, there are a lot of options you can either add to your "plain Jane" model 1911, or you can purchase the pistol with all the bells and whistles already installed. That's where the difference in price comes in.

I've had a couple of 1911's and they've all been good. Several years ago, I wanted to find a standard, no frills, yet solid, 1911. Couldn't find a Colt at that time that matched what I wanted. It seemed that the ones available were ones like the Gold Cup or similar. So, I went with a plain ol' Springfield Mil-Spec. It's a good gun and has been great for what I purchased it for. On the other hand, you might want adjustable sights, so you might want to look at another type with certain upgrades.

But, the bottom line is...you have to decide what you want.

I have 2 Springer's and I wouldn't sell either one, even at today's elevated prices. Look around and pick one out. Then the fun begins.

series 70 Colt

The series 70 Colt Combat Commanders are my favorite. I have three; one in each caliber and a Lightweight Commander from the 50's in .45 ACP

Look no further than STI.

Here's a custom one they just finished for me.

All of their 1911s (except the Spartan) have their slides custom fit to a specific frame. Just one thing that sets them apart from the others.

The Springfields are nice as are the rugers an smiths. But if you want a great quality 1911. Look into STI. You won't find quality like that at most other manufacturers.

Stay away from kimbers. They're priced 2-$300 more than they're actually worth. They look nice and all that but their quality isn't worth their price tag.

And of course you can't go wrong with a colt.

Sig Sauer is a nice one too.

And then you have Wilson Combat and Les Baer but those get pricey.

You can't go wrong with Nighthawk Custom, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, or Les Baer. You do pay for these but they are worth every penny. 1911's don't lend themselves to modern manufacturing techniques. They take a lot of hand fitting to work properly. The above companies specialize in this.
