Which factory load shoots best out of your 642? I like Buffalo Bore generally because I can get it... Does the 158gr hit point of aim better than 130gr? Does +P & standard pressure hit the same spot with your gun?

My 642 enjoys dining on Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 gr. +Ps. It's made specifically for guns like the 642, and the testing results are fairly impressive as well.

My 637 Airweight (the visible hammer version of your 642) is loaded with Remington +p 158gr LSWCHP, the version of the FBI load best suited for snubbies. It uses dead soft lead bullets, whereas the Winchester and Federal versions use hardcast bullets -- just fine for longer barreled handguns but iffy on expansion from snubbies. As mentioned above, Speer's 135gr Gold Dots are well regarded. I have their near twin, the 9mm 124gr Gold Dots in my Browning High Power.

I tried the Speer ammo, but it shoots low. All the light ammo does.

My 642 shoots to point of aim with the 158 gr loads, so that's what I use, and why I use it. The FBI load, if you will.

The Airweights can be a booger on recoil with the 158 gr +P loads. I get faster follow up shots with a lighter weight bullet. I mainly use 125 gr +P Gold Dots right now but have some of the 135 gr +P Gold Dots on backorder.

I also recently came into a bunch of different types of .38 Special ammo--CorBon DPX 110 gr +P, Federal HydraShok 129 gr +P, Federal 125 gr Nyclad HP, Remington 125 gr +P Golden Sabre HP and a few others I can't remember. I'm gonna have fun trying them out once I get the opprotunity.

As for lighter weight bullets shooting low...I just aim higher.
