Hello everyone! I'm new to this site and have just recently purchased a brand new S&W Sigma .40cal and I wanted to know which brand ammunition and grain do you guys prefer/use for shooting at the range??

Mine hasn't had a problem with any ammo I have feed it either. I'm tempted to purchase some Wolf brand ammo and see what happens using the super cheap stuff.

Mine likes the Federal and Blazer brass 180gr FMJ, and Remington UMC JHP 180gr. I won't buy WWB on a bet anymore. It sure does NOT like Magtech Guardian Gold 155gr, had a jam every single time.

Have used; Speer Lawman, Gold Dot, Hornady TAP, WWB, UMC, and Ultramax. Not a hiccup out of any.

Winchester white box has worked fine in my Sigma, but it's dirty. Lots of cleaning after a range trip. Speer lawman 180g works well and is relatively clean.

BTW OP, I see you're from Des Moines. What side of town? I graduated from Roosevelt way back in the day. Glad to see Iowa a shall issue state now. Hope you enjoy your Sigma and your right to carry!

thanks for your guys 0.02cents!!

bitstream, im from the eastside of town graduated from east high......... also which brand of holster will fit the sigma very snug, will galco leather carry a size for that? i've tried searching online but nothing!

@sw40ve515: Nice to see another person from DM. My best OWB holster for the Sigma is my Fobus HK-1. It works great. I don't know about Galco, I have an IWB leather holster from Georgia Holster Group in size Medium that fits my Sigma like a glove. It conceals well.

Here are my Sigma .40 tips:

180 grain seems to work best for me

Some people seem to shoot it very well; I do suspect the gun is mechanically accurate. However, many do not shoot it with exceptional accuracy, myself included. I have managed to get and stay on the target, but only by working hard at it. I do suspect the Sigma got me to work out my technique and make me a better shooter. I just got a Springfield XDm .45 and from my very first shot am shooting bullseyes. I can even stitch overlapping holes at 25 yards. But, when I switch back to my Sigma 5 seconds later, I'm grouping everything low by about 8-10 inches. I switch back to the XDm and start ripping the center ring out of the target.

Why?

My best guess is either the trigger break (which is something I need to work on my technique and/or do some work on the trigger to smooth it), or it's the sights (perhaps my sights are off?), or the .40 goes low? (I doubt it).

But, at least I know that my grip, sighting, stance, breathing, etc are all ok.

If you are dead on, then great! If you're not... then work on your technique first and possibly your trigger next.

I think im either going to go with hornady or remington ammunition since i also have another pistol which is also .40cal, glock23, i think they both would like that much better that winchester white box!
