I have been reading some books on revolver shooting and am wondering if there is general consensus about fingers over fingers thumbs over thumps versus thumbs forward.
I used crossed thumbs when I shot revolvers in PPC matches in the late 1970s early 80s. The use of semiautos precludes this thumb position. Now I use thumb over thumb shooting both.
Hint: If you are a right handed shooter, when shooting single action use the thumb of your left hand to cock the hammer back. This way your grip on the revolver does not change - consistency. Reverse this for left handed shooting obviously. It will give you better groups once this method is mastered.
I use thumb over thumb when shooting my revolvers and thumbs forward on semiauto pistols, but I really have to think about it. Thumb over thumb has always felt more comfortable for me even shooting semiauto pistols.
I shot police revolver competition on our pistol team for many years (back when revolvers were king). We traveled and I lived on the firing ranges back then. I'm talking about combat type courses with rapid reloads.
I used the loose handshake grip as we were taught back then. I have an attic full of trophies. Always qualified expert.
That said, Jerry Miculek says I was doing it wrong.
