A long time ago, I bought an unfinished/unassembled bookcase at either Lowes or Home Depot in order to stain it to match some other furniture. It was assembled with metal screw-in dowel pins and cams that you tightened with a screwdriver. The price was reasonable for the mid-quality veneer and plywood construction, and the piece came together nicely. The bookcase was flat on the sides with no protruding trim, so you could assemble a whole wall of them and it would look OK.

I found an image of the type of bookcase, but the online price seems pretty steep compared to what I paid at Lowes or Home Depot and neither place carries that brand anymore.

Anyone know a good place to go for this type of unfinished/unassembled bookcase for a better price than this:

Well . . . it does include shipping. That's probably over $100 for something that heavy.

Yeah, I figured that.... I'll drive to Grand Rapids and pick this up myself... Just found this company online. Solid hardwoods, unfinished, already assembled, 36X72 for $350. Might get a price on that trestle table I always wanted....

I've gotten bookcases from Ikea and have been very pleased with the quality and durability of them. They are made from real wood planks, not glued sawdust board.

Not to seem snarky, but if you are already planning to assemble and stain, have you considered just getting the wood and also measuring, cutting, and drilling? If you have the tools, and are moderately handy, it might be easier to just build your own from scratch. Just a thought.

It all depends on the quality and what you want. Some things look great in the picture but are not that sturdy. If you want a high quality piece that will last your lifetime that is about what I would expect to pay and that bookcase looks pretty decent in the picture but you never know until you receive it.
