looking for some input from anyone who has tried subsonic ammo in your 15-22. what did you use, how did it function, how was the accuracy and how was the noise report?

i've tried some remington subs. they cycled well for a few rounds and then the action wouldn't reset fully. a new round would get fed but the bolt didn't travel far enough to recock the hammer. i also had a few duds that didn't fire. when i ejected them, they had a nice indent in the rim from the firing pin. bad primer i assumed. i didn't test for accuracy, was mostly looking to see if it would function. the noise was reduced but i would guess that 10-20% went supersonic.

thanks guys.

I tried some German made Dynamit Nobel, 40 grain hollow point sub sonic rounds but my M&P 15-22 won't fully cycle the bolt. I bought a brick of them a couple of years ago at a gunshow and my 10/22 will cycle them just fine.

Out of my 10/22 or my Browning BL22 lever gun they are plenty accurate but with reduced range. I've taken a number of unwanted critters with them including a pretty good sized raccoon. The report is about 60% as loud as a standard high velocity round.

I didn't buy my 15-22 to shoot subsonics so I'm not concerned about it, but I was curious if it would handle them or not.

fiocchi cycled fine thrw mine with a can.. wasnt bench shooting it just letting my wife play with it.. chattanoogaphil and ghooge2008 have both heard it they can give a report on noise

Heard what? I didn't hear anything.... ;)

the goal was for it to sound like a pissed off staple gun...:D

i believe he was askin about subs.. if they have HV in the title im pretty sure they will break the sound barrier

how "clean" are the fiochhi's? i've heard annecdotal reports of subs being pretty dirty compared to standard and high velocity.

want to find ammo that will cycle so in a few months when the tax stamp arrives i'm ready.:D

to be honest all sub ammo for the most part is coated in wax, this wax will gum one up quick.. it cleans very easy and usually as long as ur firing it will stay slick enough not to cause problems... but putting a can on anything will make the rifle get dirty quicker... your creating alot more back pressue in the gun so most all ammo should feed( depends on suppressor design) but plan on it being dirtier after a trip to the range.... good news thow tax stamps seem to be coming back abit quicker

wax coating...that's what i've heard but i don't understand why they coat the rounds. if the issue is that it's less likely to cycle, how does wax help? i would think wax coating will help feeding but if the action cycles far enough to eject the spent round, i wouldn't think feeding would be an issue.

any ideas?

the wax coating has nothing to do with the feeding.. with out the coating when the bullet is fired, friction will cause the lead bullet to heat up and melt to the rifling after a few rounds the barrel will be so leaded up tha the gun will not cycle... extreme back pressure... anything that shoots below 1050fps + ambi. temp will stay sub sonic and be quiet.. anything that is faster will still have the sonic boom but from a distance no 1 can tell really where the shot came from.... the fiocchi are heavily waxed because they are a target round not just a sub but they r light loaded enough to not cycle the bolt really hard making it even quieter.. by the way wetting the can makes a huge difference in volume and removes the "first round pop"

I heard his can, and fiocchi cycled the action just fne...almost all target ammo is sub-sonic. actually I didnt hear his can...I heard his action and the splat of lead.

Keep in mind that sub-sonic ammo will run differently with a supressor than with out. It's possible that sub-sonic ammo that does not reliably run in the 15-22 action will work just fine with a supressor.

ETA: oops, BELT_FED already addressed this
