I came across an Amazon listing for a "Big Dot" sight by XS for pinned sight J frames.

I always have difficulty obtaining a sight picture (especially at the range), and having checked the same out at my LGS, am leaning toward getting one. Two questions:

1) Anyone already have experience with one?
2) Should a gunsmith install it?

I agree that the big dot is probably a great addition to a carry snubbie if nothing else, because the dot fits so nicely in the rear groove of your 360.
In a SD situation, you will probably not see the sights but training will be aided by forcing you to focus.

At that low price, I would avoid one dinner out and buy the Big Dot.

As for the install, I have never changes one so stick around and a pro will come in here and answer. IF you needed a smith with the correct tools to do the job, I suspect it would be a very low cost install taking only a couple of minutes.

I had a 637 that I was going to put these on, but being that it required milling the existing front I decided not to. The pinned front sights require only drilling, if your comfortable doing the drilling go for, otherwise let a gunsmith do it. I have a big dot on my 9c and it makes for a much better sight picture. Just keep in mind these are not target sights and will not punch out the X at 25 yards, but it will keep you on center mast.

I put one on my model 60 357 mag snubbie and I love it. It is my bed side table gun because of the tritium night sight capability of the Big Dot front sight.

I installed it myself. If I remember correctly it came with the proper drill bit for drilling the pin hole through the mounted front sight blade. Go slowly and drill a little from one side and then a little from the other side using the pin hole in the front sight base as a guide, until you work your way through and you won't break the drill bit.

If you do break the drill bit, ACE hardware carries the numbered drill bits.

After a brief discussion with my LGS, I ordered the Big Dot sight. It should arrive tomorrow. Unfortunately, my work schedule won't permit me to drop off my gun and the sight until Monday. LGS said about $40 and an hour time, depending on work load. I said I was prepared to leave the gun overnight if necessary.
