Big Grizzly and a Tough Tool Box

This is why I wouldn't trust bear spray (alone) when in grizzly territory:
They tried to "haze" him away....with no effect!

Grizzly bear attack: Backcountry guide mauled to death while fishing near Yellowstone National Park

If you read the article, they tried to "haze" the bear away. I don't see where they deployed bear spray. The victim had spray but they don't have evidence he used it. Also, was it the same bear both times (i.e. necropsy performed?). Bears just came out of winter sleep and are REALLY hungry! He had a treasure trove in the form of a dead moose!

Know WHY grizzlies have that big humpback? Because they live off of caterpillars and ground squirrels when the first emerge (after purging with grass). Forget Oak Island, a moose carcass is Blackbeard's treasure to them!

The mountain men called grizzlies "Ole Ephraim" ("Leave him be for he is set in his ways")

All of the above being said, my wife and I were discussing a Yellowstone fly fishing trip this fall just this morning; we both will be carrying spray and I will have a G20 with heavy hard cast under my shirt.

When I was at the Bear & Wolf Center in West Yellowstone some years ago, they were testing how various containers stood up to bears, by putting them into the grizzly enclosure. They probably put some food inside.

Maybe a good idea to hand a manufacturer's rep who claims their dumpster is "bear-safe" a Big Mac meal and make him spend a few hours inside the dumpster. :)

When I was doing my Thesis study, there was a bear in Angeles Forest that taught her cubs to climb in and hand food out through the small "hatch". She also learned that if she pushed a dumpster so that the wheel would catch a rock, it would tip over (Remember hitting a rock while skateboarding=I broke at least 2 toes that way!).

People would come just to see her. She was shot by an "Undocumented citizen" claiming self defense. Of course, his first comments were "Do I get to keep the skin?"
