That is some large tracks!
I'd go with wolf being that size...

It's not a large cat...contrary to popular "yankee beliefs", I do know what large cat tracks look like!:D

Some years ago during broad daylight...

I was driving down a Farm Market road in Falls County, Texas. A HUGE canine ran from a field one one side of the road to the other...but he stopped for an instant and looked my direction. I had relatives on board with me and I commented about that being the biggest blankety-blany coyote I had ever seen. One relative comment "That ain't a coyote, that's a wolf. You see them around from time to time..." like it was no big deal.

I thought wolves were extinct except for a few parts near the Mexican border.

Guess not. (for those unfamilar, Falls County is in central Texas...near Temple and Waco)

Some feral dogs and dog-coyote crosses (coydogs) get pretty big. A lot depends on the original dog breed.

The Last Standing Knight...

The reason people thought they were extinct is because they were told they were. And many times what they are told isn't always the truth. I guess one thing that seems hard to believe is the fact that the people in different areas where animals are supposed to be extinct view their existence as "no big deal"! If you don't live in that area all you have to base your opinion on is what some "so-called expert" believes to be true and has published a report.
Back in 1973, the Tellico Dam(TVA) project was halted because biology professor David Etnier discovered the snail darter in the Little Tennessee River. He said it would alter the habitat of the river to the point of wiping out the snail darter because this was the only known place where the little fish lived. Under the Endangered Species Act, the project was stopped for 6 years and went all the way to the Supreme Court, then to Jimmy Carter who signed the bill that exempted Tellico from the Endangered Species Act.

So... what did the local people think about all this?
They thought it was hilarious! One big joke! Why?
They knew the snail darter was in every water way on that side of the Great Smoky Mountains!

So who are you going to believe?
