I heard that 500 five inch 686 revolvers were made for Bill Davis in 1989. I can't find much information about them. We're they worked over by Bill Davis gunsmiths? Or were they turned by S&W?

See the scallops on the top of the stocks? The one under the cylinder release is a speedloader cut, to allow clearance for a speed loader. The one on the right panel is to show off the etching of the B27 Target.

I got it. Thanks.

Really nice revolver. What I don't know is if they were made at the factory the way that they are and shipped to Bill Davis to be sold OR Davis gunsmiths did some work on them. Gun feels really smooth.

They way I am reading in S&W catalog, sounds like a ready product was shipped to Bill Davis in 1989. Was there a performance center at that time ?

Here's one of them wearing dual speedloader cutout Checkered Target stocks. When I bought this gun, it came with set of very plain standard Checkered Targets; these are not full of figure but they have three-sided bookending. I was told the original Bill Davis grips were hard to find and quite costly if you lucked into one. I found a new one on eBay for $18.

I think the five-inch barrel is the best length for overall handling. For a few years, I sought out a five-inch 629 Classic DX, a one-year offering close to 30 years ago. When I finally found one, I paid less for it than this 686NM set me back. I can believe someone did some work on the action of this 686 as it is perfectly smooth and the trigger breaks like thin glass but the person from whom I bought it swears it came out of its case like that.

By the way, I found both of those guns on GunBroker.

That's my point. According to the book they shipped 500 guns to Bill Davis shop in Sacramento. I been to the shop in the 80's . My thinking is that they did an action tune before selling them. I have no idea on their value today but they are sure nice revolvers.
