My second favorite thing to do in the whole world is going on my annual bird hunting trip to central Kansas where we hunt quail, pheasant, and turkey. I carry a Yildiz Turkish made side by side 20 gauge with #7-1/2 shot Improved Cylinder in the left barrel and 3 inch #5 shot Full choke in the right barrel. It's a bunch of fun with some great guys hunting dawn till dusk and the season starts next month and I can hardly wait. Been thinking of buying another shotgun but the Yildiz does everything I want and need it to do and it was under 500 bucks. Most of the guys have over/under Brownings and Beretta's but I can't see how changing shotguns will improve anything for me I just need to get to trap range and practice a bit before hunting season starts.

I envy you so much. I really miss Kansas bird hunting. most of mine was NE and N central. so many birds. I did all my turkey hunting on Ft Leavenworth in the spring. I mostly used an old Ithaca 37 in 20 ga with a full choke and high brass 2 3/4 #6s. that little gun would reach out and touch them. thanks for sharing and I want to see new pics this year. lee

Never had the opportunity to hunt birds like that but it looks like a good days haul. Could you tell a little about how it’s done?

lived in Kansas for 6 years & had an uncle who farmed around
Dodge City. He knew all the area for around probably 10 to 20 miles. The quail, pheasant & prairie chicken hunting was fantastic but shooting rabbits while bird hunting was a big no no

Pheasants

Thank you so much for sharing your Story
and Pictures.

South Dakota's starts this Month. We have
a Youth, a Public Area, and the full blown Season
starts 19Oct19 at 1200 CST.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

A man after my own heart. Pheasant hunting as you put it was my lifetime second favorite thing to do also. I and a lot of friends would go to western Kansas several time each year. We would plan our hunts for months and had access to a lot of property out there. We had friends near Lacrosse and Rush Center that farmed there and they would come back here to NE Kansas to hunt quail. So many hunts, so many stories. Thanks for the post. I never got to hunt turkeys as they were never around until the late 70s to 80s. Personally, I think they should put a bounty on turkeys.

Here is what I used to harvest many, many pheasants and quail, my Model 12 U.S. army riot gun. I wish I had the legs to do it all over again.

Thanks for the post and memories.

Enjoy your hunt!! I am going for my first day of the season tomorrow. Quail and Pheasant opened today in Oregon. While I live in Idaho, I mainly bird hunt in Oregon.

I bird hunted for decades, lost my last bird hunting partner a few years back. Had great hunts, great companionship, some great dogs and now fading memories of it all. I hunted for years with an old 16 ga. A5, then about 20 years with a SxS 16 ga.
Have a great hunt, enjoy yourself and the company of your companions, two and four legged.

As cliche as it sounds, annual hunting traditions are so meaningful and create such memories. Thanks for sharing yours OP
