Recently noticed at least one very black squirrel doing squirrelly things along with the many grey squirrels doing similarly squirrelly things in the backyard. Internet says that black squirrels are relatively rare.

From the top it looks very black. From the side, as in this photo from this morning, it looks mostly black.

We used to stop at a campground in Gadsden Alabama that had those things all over the place. They are notorious for their destructive habits such as chewing wire insulation and just causing havoc. When I saw one crawling out from under the motorhome last time we decided that maybe we shouldn't stay there any more. The place was Nocculula Falls and it was one of the most beautiful campgrounds we ever stayed at.

I've got grey and brown squirrels on my property, never have seen a black one.
When I first bought my house a couple of them did over $1,000 damage in my attic chewing up wires.

Now I kill them on sight.
My GAMO Silent Cat pellet gun is perfect for whacking pest quietly.

Before posting this I got another one.
I hate them.

I was just typing a white squirrel sighting story. It was before the days of cell cameras and pictures of everything.

Never saw that albino again.....guess it couldn't hide form predators too well.

PeterJ you beat me to it. I was gonna mention the Gadsden squirrels but you got there first. There are also quite a few of them close to the Mississippi River in the Vicksburg area.

Grey squirrels can have a melanistic genetic mutation. There's a colony of 'em in Ontario, Canada and I saw bunches of them when I was in Ganonoque. Evidently there's a well established colony across the Saint Lawrence River in New York.

Strange to see these creatures if you're used to seeing grey squirrels. They behave very similarly. Black Squirrels: What Are They and Where Did They Come From?

Geez...see them all the time around here. Probably from Battle Creek. We see fox, grey, and black on our place. Also the little red fellas

we had black squirrels in NE where I lived. they pretty much were down along the MO river but were moving into town. not legal to kill back then. we have a town full of white squirrels 10 miles north of me in Kenton, TN. a few have migrated out and I even saw one near here several years ago. lee

I think there are more than one specieces of Black squirrels. I saw article one time that the Black squirrel in eastern mountains are fox squirrels. I believe that because they are a good bit bigger than Greys. Also the Blacks I've seen in SE Ontario are the same. I have seen areas with small Black squirrel that I thought were a phase of what we call Pineys around here. The common squirrel in my area are Red Fox, grey & Red which are the Pineys. I think futher south the Pineys are grey. I think the Pineys are the species that cause damage

We have mostly black ones here in Marshall, MI. My fiancee likes to feed them with stale bread or french fries. Only problem is raccoons and opossums like them too. We even have a ground hog that stops by once in a while. Keep you house sealed up good and they won't get in the attic.

We have gray and red here but in the northern part of the state you will see black ones.

Only see the red ones here. They are not native. Supposedly rode in on oak trees brought in by the thousands in the 1950's. Funny thing is I never remember seeing them until the 1980's, They have since become much more common.

My funniest encounter with a squirrel was in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. My then nine year old son and I were resting on a hiking trail. Sitting under a large madrone tree when the earth vibrated. I thought something huge had fallen behind me, and I turned around to see the biggest fattest squirrel I've ever seen. Evidently he had jumped down out of the tree.
