Hello, new to the forum and even though this is my first post I have read a ton of information. Now my question, I purchased a Bodyguard .38 last year and it has done quite well. Recently I squeezed the trigger while the cylinder was open and it completely cycled as if the cylinder was closed. If I pull on the button on the bottom of the frame that is pressed when the cylinder is closed, the trigger will not cycle. I am not completely sure if all the parts names. Other than that everything works fine and I don't know if I should be concerned. I appreciate any and all help.

Welcome to the forum. You will indeed learn a lot here.

With the cylinder out you should not be able to pull the trigger. You must have a problem with the bolt which has a spring behind it to prevent just such an occurance. It may be something as simple as a cleaning or it may have been messed with. The thumbpiece nut secures the thumbpiece to the bolt. Look for an online resource for any S&W manual which should show a parts breakdown and nomenclature.

With your level of knowledge you should take it to a competent gunsmith for repair. It is a simple fix even if he has to replace the bolt and spring and it should not cost much.

The thumbpiece on mine eats me alive! I finally healed the "hole" it gave me between my thumb and forefinger. (? how do you get a blood stain off the rubber?)

As I understand it, I can't replace the grips with something "fatter" to enable me to keep my hand farther back. I read in here somewhere about a "boot" to fit over it, but as I recall that isn't available yet.

I went to Gander Mt. and picked up some gloves, hoping that might help, but I haven't tried them yet. The 2nd time I took the .38 to the range I wore gloves with no protection or padding, just "girl gloves" and a bandaid and still bled. BTW, it's a great gun and very accurate, but I sure wish I could make it like me as much as I like it!

Oh, and thinking as the mother of invention, I'm also going to try a corn plaster thing! Don't laugh, it has the right shape and a hole in the center and I'm thinking if I put that over the area and then put a piece of tape to make sure it stays put and then put the glove on.... well, we'll see....I just hate being beat up by my own gun!

With the cylinder open the trigger will NOT pull back...........
if the gun is in good working order, It will start to move then lock up.

There are "Full" Hogue grips that will fit your bodyguard, the
pre 1990 styles................... not the new space age one.

THANKS for that info! You wouldn't happen to have a link to help me find one, would you?
