Book: Spies- Rise and fall of the KGB in America; Haynes, KLehr, and Vassiliev; Yale University Press. 2009 650pp.
Vassiliev supplied the information for this book and the previous book "The Haunted Wood". He is a former (?) KGB agent, and was selected by the KGB to work with Weinstein author of the Haunted Wood.
This book is well worth your reading if you are interested in the KBG penetration of the US government, press, academia, and industry from the 30's through the 50's.
Keeping in mind that the KGB was not the only Soviet intelligence agency working here and that Vassiliev was not given complete access to their archives, it is still a very damming account.
From this book we know that our losses to the Soviets were immense. Further, most of the Americans involved were doing what they did for ideology not money. Whether we will ever know the complete extent of the damage done is doubtful.
For those of us who were around during this period and remember the pious claims of purity by the guilty, this sort of detailed exposé can still make the blood boil.
Recommended.
Roger.
