I never really sat down and watched this movie until the other night. It is on TCM on demand for now.
Its a great movie - the wonderful Judy Holliday is Billie, the kept-woman of junk mobster Broderick Crawford. She is an ex-chorus girl, who is not as dumb as everyone thinks.
William Holden is hired to smarten her up, and of course he falls in love with her and dramedy ensues.
Holliday won an Academy Award for her role, beating out the likes of Gloria Swanson, Bette Davis, and Anne Baxter. Richly deserved, too.
What caught my eye was the scene where Billie is at the Library of Congress, and looks at an original copy of the Bill of Rights. She leans in and reads: THE SECOND AMENDMENT.
Not played for laughs - she just reads it with a little help from Bill Holden when she gets hung up on "infringed".
Somehow this movie got tagged as possibly pro-Communist, since Bill Holden rags on fascists. Holliday later was dragged in front of the McCarthy committee and charmed her way out of it.
