i am currently searching for a "correct" box for my prewar outdoorsman. it is circa 1935 and was curious if this would call for a "blue" box as i have seen for sale ! also, any information or availability of the correct box would be most helpful ! i have found several for sale , but mostly "blue" or the "gold" for the masterpiece ! thanks in advance .....mac....fl

I thought the picture box for the K-22 Outdoorsman was a red box. The blue boxes were for N-frames like the .38/44 Outdoorsman and .357 Magnum.

Before the red picture box was developed, the first K-22 ODs were shipped in maroon hinged box like this one.

You can see the later red picture box in post 23 in this thread:

David: Whats the inside top look like. No reason to photograph it (unless you want to), but is it the M&P instructions or the K22 specific ones? I'm guessing the helpful hints came with the red picture box.

The box is actually a .38 M&P box with a K-22 label pasted on the end. The text inside the lid addresses the .38 M&P. There is a stamped "22-38 H.E." on the inside of the lid. That is how the company referred to the K-22 internally, just as they had called the .22 revolver built on the .32 frame the .22-32 (or .22/32, as we tend to write it now).

so a m&p 38 box would suffice ? or close to the original ? but still in the "maroon, hinged" contents i take it ! a smart man would have been the collector of simply boxes of every form , a hoarder of yesteryear could have left a billionaire estate upon what most considered trash !

Ok, thanks. Its what I think we should call a 1st model K22 Outdoorsman's box. The one with the 22 specific instructions pasted in would be a 2nd Model K22 Outdoorsman's box. Which leaves us with the red picture box being the 3rd. Then the K22 Masterpiece box would be the 4th box. As we degenerate into complete insanity, these things become important.

Hello Mac44reasons
As Other's have shared with you there were Three boxes used for the First K-22 Outdoorsman series revolver's that were manufactured from 1931-1939. Mine was shipped in September 1936 and came in the Red picture box as shown below. Being yours was made in 1935 It may be very Likely your's came in a box like mine has and is shown with below. I hope this helps... Hammerdown

I believe that Hammerdown nailed it. The red picture boxes were used from 1933-1941 according to the SCSW, so by 1935 they should have been all that was used for the K-22 Outdoorsman. You guys have some great boxes!

thanks guys , guns gold and cardboard, who would have guessed? beautiful boxes above , hell the guns even look pretty good too ! lol
