Bridge of Spies

We saw the movie and liked it a lot. I kind of wish they would have spent a little more time focusing on Gary Powers and maybe some of his spy tools, like his High Standard .22 pistol with silencer. The "spying" by both countries was pretty interesting and deadly in those days but the movie made it seem like the Russian spy was a "sweet little old man" that you should feel sorry for. He might have even killed some Americans we don't know about on other missions.

This film was about Donovan and how he came to be our negotiator in these situations. If wouldn't have been Gary Powers it would've been someone else. In addition there are many facts about the deal left out as the film would've been at least 2 more hours longer lol.

As for Gary Powers, he became in some ways a tragic figure. No one but him was in the cockpit, he said the destruct mechanism didn't function. He was eventually awarded both the CIA's Service Star and the USAF Silver Star. His son also has book out worth reading.

I can't recommend Jim Donovan's book enough for those that want the "rest of the story".

As a kid we moved to Tucson, my dad would take me out to watch the U2s do their "touch and go" routines at Davis-Monthan AFB. Cool stuff for sure to a 12 yr. old.

This one is at the top of my must see list. I like just about everything Tom Hanks has done.

I have a 22 year old co-worker that said he saw it twice. I asked him if he knew who Gary Powers was before he saw the movie. To my surprise he had heard about him. He is not a typical 22 year old though. He enjoys history and is a gun guy.:D A real good kid too.
