Bought a Shield on Monday and shot it yesterday - only 30 rounds 115 FMJ and eight Remington 115 hollowpoints. No issues.
A couple of points -
First, the gun is very easy to shoot, very light recoil. My 3913, has more muzzle flip than the Shield.
The gun is slim but is still easy to get a firm grip on, even with the flat mag and the pistol has good ergonomics. I find the Beretta 92 grip to be a perfect fit for my hands, ditto with the Sig P229. Since I tend to like the double stack pistols, I was most concerned that the Shields grip would be too thin or too short for me to get a good grip on. No so. The gun points well and I can grip it naturally.
The gun is accurate. I shot at broken pieces of a clay pigeon at 35 yards, two hand hold unsupported. I hit these little targets every 3 to 4 shots. The misses were on me as I was learning the trigger pull (very nice by the way) and the proper sight picture. When I missed, it was never by more than an inch or so, and my misses were always grouped together (in my case 9 o'clock). I know that the weapon is designed for close encounters (sub 21 feet) , but it is nice to know that I can accurately reach out to five times the expected encounter distances and still get good hits.
The safety is not an issue at all. If you want to use it fine, if you don't it is unobtrusive.
I normally prefer full sized handguns, even for concealed carry because I have a hard time shooting small guns well. The shield feels small but still shoots like a big gun. The excellent sights are a big part this. The trigger pull contributes to its shoot-ability as well.
I understand the excitement over this little gun, especially when its retail price is $450. This gun can certainly give all of the other pocket DAO or striker fire 9mms a run for the money.
This is the gun that a modern day 007 would carry.
