I'm really tired of seeing young kids, many in the lower grades carrying these heavy backpacks and walking in a stooped gait.
This cannot be healthy. I had lockers! Just because we have some gang-bangers hiding drugs or other contraband; they punish everyone. Hell, they just carry their illegal stuff in their backpacks.
What happen to random locker-searches, unannounced dog sniffers, curtailing locker visitations to certain periods of the day?
There is nothing wrong with carrying a few books, or your gym bag. Am I crazy or what?
I say ban BACK-PACKs!

I don't think you are crazy, but I'm not sure about our leaders at all levels. They seem to lack guts, common sense, and whatever other adjectives that we want to add to the list.

My daughter has lockers in her middle school now, and had them in elementary school, too.

25 years ago, when I was in high school, it was stressed to us that, at any time and for no reason, the Vice Principal or the Principal could search our lockers. They were school property, therefore no warrant was needed, or so we were told. Could they not do the same now?

Totall agree with the locker issue. I remember in high school, the pricipal coming over the loud speaker, saying that they now had dogs patrolling the sections of school that shouldn't be occupied after-hours. Many thought that he was just trying to scare students, but one night at a dance, some of us walked up to the gated area, made plenty of noise, and her comes this attack dog charging at us! Thank God the gate was closed! I don't know how long this was deemed legal, but dogs patrolled for at least two of my final years!

I'm sure locker checks these days are some sort of invasion of privacy, so if they get rid of the lockers, they are in the clear.

they are allowed to check them in most states now. the schools have the rights to check the students backpacks and cars with even a whim of reasonable cause. Also, since most schools have an on campus officer these days, many with a k9, getting reasonable cause is pretty easy.

My youngest daughter had lockers available but preferred to carry 50# of books around. It helped her perfect a very powerful tennis serve in HS.
