After shooting Smiths for a quarter century, I finally had the firing pin break off the hammer nose of a 629. As I'm thinking this is a relatively rare event, do you more experienced folks think that I can sweet talk S&W customer service and get them to send me a new one? This is for a 629-4. If not, I can get the part from Brownell's or Midway. I noticed that Brownell's does not list the pin(actually a rivet) that is needed to attach the new part. Does a new hammer nose come with the rivet? Looks like the old rivet gets compromised when drifting it out to remove the hammer nose. Anything special as to technique regarding installing a new hammer nose? If this has already been covered in a sticky.........my bad!

I had 2 break on 2 different guns within a year. Both guns were ex-police trades with who knows how much use. I paid a gunsmith to replace the first, cost about $30 parts and labor. The second I did myself, with parts ordered from S&W. Took less than an hour. The original rivet did not survive removal (I drilled it out). I flared the new rivet with a centerpunch.

I had one break on a new 629 the first time I had it out. Took it back to the dealer and let them ship it.

All you have to do is punch out the old rivet with a pin punch, swap parts and replace the same rivet. It's about a 10 minute job. Put a
center punch upside down in the vise and another one on top with
a hammer to restake the rivet.
