I know a lot has been said lately that S&W customer service, quality control is falling behind but I called to see if they would sell me a replacement striker. I bought the gun used and would have gladly paid for one but they are sending me one for free great bunch of guy's.
With that type of service you can bet that my next gun will be a S&W.

Glad they took care of you. Did you ask them if this was still an issue? I know the newer strikers are suppose to be better but since you bought the gun used, who knows what the previous owner did to it.

Yes S&W said it was probably just a fluke. When I bought the gun it did not look like it had been fired. I think the owner had dry fired the heck out of it because there was some wear on the slide tabs.

The breakage reported on the earlier machined strikers occurred behind the head, at the narrowest part (machined groove behind the head), not at the tip.

When they adopted the new striker they changed the way the striker body and head were designed, making it a stronger unit. In your picture it looks like just the tip broken off. I'd be inclined to agree that it was probably just a "fluke". Upon occasion the tip of firing pin may break off even on a traditional firing pin, which is one of the things armorers look for during inspections.

In these images the original striker is the black part and the other one is the new striker.

Thank you for the info and pictures. I was curious to see what both striker looked like side by side. You can defiantly see that the stainless is a much improved design .

I've got an M&P 9c that I bought in 2008 (my first polymer pistol). I'd read about striker problems so I bought the improved replacement when they came out just to have a spare. After close to 14K rounds all I've replaced are recoil spring assemblies.

Guess I got lucky, also never had a gritty trigger.
