A picture is worth a thousand words..

Somebody needs to shoot that realtor for those photos. A serious bunch of "unflattering" pics. 8 bedrooms! Hugh Hefner should buy it for a retirement villa. Do they have termites in Utah? What is involved in buying/living in a house that is "historically registered"? Can you make alterations?

And, of course, is the house in the "hood". Or are there "hoods" in Utah???

i just finished reading one of his books, what a great man!!!!!!!
would be fun to own the house....

No real hoods or termites in Utah. Ogden has some questionable locations with a little more gang activity then most other places in the state but nothing too serious. I am not sure why the Browning company doesn't buy it and move their outlet store onto the property or something. Maybe that wouldn't be in good taste though. The outlet store is up the canyon in Morgan, UT and about as obscure a place as can be.
The price is reasonable for the size of the house but with it being a historical marker I am not sure you can change much about it and thus becomes either simply a tourist attraction or you decide to live in a house that hasn't been updated for awhile.

How about Bill Ruger's former estate in Southport, CT for $4.25 million ?
It is interesting that no mention is made of Ruger as a former owner. He sold it in 1992 after his wife's death, it probably changed hands a couple of times after that. I looked on a map and it's just a few blocks from the original "Red Barn" factory location.

That's exactly what I thought. Whoever took those thought viewers would be interested in minutia instead of, say, the house itself. "Hey here's this historic old house! Wanna see pics of it? Yes? Too bad. Here are some pictures of some books instead!"

You pay the owner money - they deed the property to you. :D Just like any other house.

Alterations depend on the laws where it's located. There may be state laws, local laws, or covenants regulating various types of alterations. Or none. I restored a 150 year old house in Granville, Ohio, that had been on the Underground Railroad and was on the Register. You had to get a permit from the Village to spit off your front porch. ;) Actually, you had to get approval to alter the outside of the house (except for paint), but the inside was fair game for anything you wanted to do. My reward for scrupulously abiding the laws was a 5 year sentence (er..., appointment) to the Planning Commission that reviewed these changes, among other things.

I love it! If it were not for my children, grand children and greats and my wife's desire to stay here, I would trade them even for my house on the water with two docks. I love historic houses, having spent a good portion of my life in Charleston, SC. Too bad I have never been to Utah and can't drag my wife of 47 years out of this place.

$350,000? That's a bargain!

Oh wait... it's in Utah...:D

Bed & Breakfast sounds like a good idea. You could advertise in the gun magazines...

"John Moses Browning slept in this very bedroom!";)
