I know that pictures are worth a thousand words but, alas, the gun is at the LGS. From my limited knowledge it appears to be a modified BSR.

A few identifiers:

Serial number-860489. No V or SV. Cylinder matches. From what I can glean from the SCS&W that falls into the 700000-1000000 range for 1940-45. There is also an example in there with a 890*** number that dates to 1942.

One line address
No UNITED STATES PROPERTY markings
5-screw
Square butt
Barrel shaped ejector rod end (LERK).
Full length ejector rod.
Obviously shortened 2.5" barrel. Undecipherable markings on the barrel flat. No cut out for LERK. No ejector rod lug.
Blade ramped front sight.
Faint evidence of a lanyard hole. Not 100% on that but that's what got me to thinking BSR. The serial number is definitely offset to the rear of the frame. Not centered.
Obviously refinished. Blue hammer and trigger.
No caliber markings anywhere. The common advice is to see if a 38 SPL will seat in the cylinder. It will. As will a 38 S&W.
Franzite stocks.

Main question:
Once again I'm no expert, but since the 38 S&W case is larger diameter than the 38 SPL, will it fit into an original 38 SPL chamber?

Same question, different scenario:
Can I shoot 38 S&W in my Model 14?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, it is a common mod for a BSR to lop off the barrel removing the extractor lug and ream the cylinder.

#1: NO
#2: NO

Serial number-860489. No V or SV.
That number, 860489, is much too high for either a V or SV anyway. And S860489 wouldn't have shipped until December, 1946.

Hence you are dealing with a revolver having the original M&P serial number sequence from late 1941. As you suspected, it started out as a BSR.
