As many of you know, I lost my best friend and companion of 11 years April 23. Bucky, a border collie mix, died suddenly on that date. I miss him still.

But I want to report that Joe, Bucky's understudy, has stepped up to the plate and taken over, nicely, as the head dog in charge. As Bucky used to sleep at the foot of the bed, Joe is doing that now. He's two years old, and his puppyness is now pretty much over. He's well-behaved, very loving (especially since Bucky died) and very loyal. He's a great watchdog - I guess he learned from Bucky to question anyone not approved by us by barking fiercely. He's nice with his little brother Tige, a Boston terrier, and lets him play with his toys. In short, he's stepped into Bucky's footprints very nicely. I'm very proud of Joe and so thankful that he learned so much from Bucky.

Here's a picture of Bucky and Joe when they were together, taken about a year ago. They loved each other a great deal and enjoyed funning around. We're pretty lucky to be blessed with such special dogs.

Truly sorry for your loss!! The only thing wrong with dogs is that they don't out live us. But then again, they'd probably miss us terribly too.

Thanks for sharing the pic. I can relate. We recently lost one of our White Boxers.

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like Joe is helping ease the pain. Bucky is in doggie Heaven smiling at y'all....

I know what you mean, we lost our mini schanuzer of 14 years this spring. Damn it's just like loseing your kid, he went everywhere and done everything with me. Just got another one , 8 weeks old last fri. almost forgot what it was to have a pup in the house again, but it sure is nice to have one around again. Have had a dog all my life and it just isn't the same without one.

You are a lucky man to have Joe. I think it is amazing how our furry friends sense our needs and step up (as you aptly stated) and take over without any instruction or encouragement.

You and I would get along. My wife brought in a pup when my old buddie was on his last legs. got 2 more good years out of him and now the pup is the king and we got him a pup to train. I've always liked 2 dogs better than one. Just a little more trouble but the fun is worth it.
