I was about a month short of being two years old, but I love his music. What is it, 63 years ago? His music will never die. Wife & I did our marriage dance thing to True Love Ways. He made a ton of good stuff; makes one wonder "What if?"
I suppose I can't leave out The Big Bopper or Richie Valens, but Holly's music is some of my all time favorite.

The West Texas Walk of Fame, featuring the Buddy Holly statue, by sculptor Grant Speed, is located inside the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza, just west of the Center, on the corner of Crickets Avenue and 19th Street. The Plaza is open to the public dawn to dusk, year round. The West Texas Walk of Fame, and its induction process, are a project of Civic Lubbock, Inc.

A couple years ago the Belmont Theater over in York, PA put on a production of "The Buddy Holly Story", and as an oldies disk jockey back in my misspent youth I was so envious. I wish I had known about the audition. I would have had a ball being in that show.

I was able to get pictures of me with the Buddy Holly and Big Bopper characters. I just hope I might get a chance sometime to be in this show some time.

I'd like to get over there & see that next time I'm in Texas. My brother-in-law is from Lubbock. He & my sister live over near San Antonio. In fact, they have a gun case with two of my dad's old rifles in it that I have to get before it's too late. Sounds like a road trip is in my future!
 
It was in 1959 that it happened, I was 19 then you can search in the CAA records for the accident there was no FAA on the scene then. After I started flying in 1964 I always thought the two big guys were in the back seats and that Buddy and the young pilot who was small framed, that maybe they were out out of balance and tail heavy. They took off into snow showers and the pilot might have just lost sight of the ground (no lights visible) and just got vertigo and lost it. I still remember how every body my age felt. They were flying from Storm Lake Ia. to Fargo for the next show. The Crickets were about to get back together. JP Richardson traded with one of the original Crickets for the seat in the Beechcraft Bonanza. All their luggage would have been left on the bus the the tour was using. Jeff
 
From all accounts I've read, it kinda boils down to the plane should have never taken off. Rookie pilot working for the charter co., or whoever, bad weather, etc. I heard one person or whoever say the plane was inverted somehow and the pilot thought they were going up, not down. I've never flown a plane back in 1958/9, or any time, so I can't make any assumptions. All I know is his young wife lost their baby after learning of the accident. Just a bad scene, man.
 
I used to play basketball and touch football with Richie Valens in a park in Los Angeles; think his real last name was Valenzuela or something similar. He was a nice kid and a good sport.
 
My son and his wife are at the Surf Ballroom right now probably waiting for Don McLean to hit the stage. His trip up to Clear Lake was anything but easy and I sure hope the show is all he wants it to be.
 
The first time I heard that Buddy Holly recorded some of his early hits in Clovis, NM i had trouble believing it.

I am 82 and could not remember Waylon's name when I posted it Thank you joenomad. I have a tape of "Maybe Baby" done in Clovis N Mexico and I think it is better than the cleaned up smooth Maybe Baby that they play now. Jeff
 
A while back I stopped in a local Deli in Las Vegas, NM.
While waiting for my sandwich I checked out the old B&W photos.
I saw a pic of Buddy Holly and Band sitting on the trunk of what appeared to be maybe 1950 Chevy.
The looked really young, cause they probably were!
 
Waylon spoke one time on a talk show about how adaptable and versatile Buddy was. He left no doubts that Buddy would be performing a lot more than the old favorites in his advanced years if he had lived longer.
