Buffalo Bore 357 158 grain question

I am leary about this brand for more than one reason. The claim of their unusually high velocity with pressure within limits goes against the rest of the industry.

Are you asking about: Heavy 357 Magnum Ammo - 158 gr. J.H.C. (1,475fps/M.E. 763 ft. lbs.) - 20 Round Box?

The only bullet manufacturer that refers to its' bullets as "Jacketed Hollow Cavity" (JHC) is Sierra. That said, the photo of this ammunition on their site appears to be Speer Gold Dot.

Why do you thing they are being evasive? No manufacturer of any product has any obligation whatsoever to disclose the manufacturer of every component in their product! The only time an ammunition manufacturer does is if it is for advertising value, because the bullet is considered to be "Premium". Obviously Buffalo Bore does not feel the need!

What brand of bullet does it have. Buffalo Bores website is very evasive about the bullet.

Search for "buffalo bore not gold dot" or similar, you will see many cases over the last several years of them making random changes to XTPs, Montana Golds, Sierras, etc.

I found this one interesting:
A strange thing happened when I bought some Buffalo Bore Ammo | Glock Talk
because it's now been 7 years since their first claimed shortage/difficulty in getting Gold Dots, and they still have not updated the descriptions or pictures to clearly state the bullet used could be anything.

I also found the reply interesting in that the owner on one hand said it would be impossible to photograph every component combo they have used:
Do you really expect me to take new pictures and then change pictures every time we got a batch Winchester, Hornady, Federal or Speer bullets? Seriously????

But on the other hand states how there is no concern, because every combination has been tested by them to ensure satisfactory performance (while also acknowledging it's a big job requiring more than a couple boxes of ammo to do):
Test those XTP’s if you like too, but that will take more than two boxes of ammo and we have already done that for you or we would have never started using XTP’s

It seems hard for me to believe that testing the terminal performance of all those various component changes is done, but photographing them, or even updating the website descriptions, is too onerous.

I do have the BB load in question and do shoot it. It does exactly what they say it will do from the revolvers they test them in. Exactly which components they are using never crossed my mind and the only important thing to me is that the load is reliable, accurate and extremely powerful.

To the contrary, many manufacturer have listed the source of their products. The auto industry got whacked for importing engines and installing them in domestic cars. Buick got hit in 1977 for using Pontiac engines. I can see that small parts can be left undescribed. However the bullet is THE main component of any round. Different manufactures bullets preform differently. They advertise a Sierra JHC, then they picture a Speer Gold Dot and apparently use a Hornaday XTP. Is it too much to ask what you are getting before you lay down cash? It sure is for me. I have a dislike for Sierra bullets for hunting but would like to try the Hornaday XTP on my next hunt.

I haven't used the load in question. But I do like BB and use it as SD ammo. I also like their website and the data that they provide. If there's a question just call or email BB and ask. I never had a problem with their ammo and/or with Mr. Sundles so far.

I have some of their Heavy .44 Special and like it. I have been considering getting some .357 too. I have seen some positive feedback on their ammo in several posts here.

I think most people buy their ammo for the terminal ballistics, not for target shooting. Their advertising purports it to be hunting and self defense ammo, as well. While I get some people buy it just to put a hurting on a piece of paper, and have fun while doing so, that is not how they market it.

Substituting a well established bullet like the Speer Gold Dot for a target bullet with virtually no documented use on animals or people like the Montana Gold is pretty pertinent information for a buyer to have beforehand. If you don't care about such info, fair enough. But it's pretty reasonable that the OP is wanting to know it.

While I haven't used that particular round, I have used many Buffalo Bore cartridges in all kinds of calibers and they all do at least what BF says they will. Great stuff.

Exactly!

I would expect each and every ammo manufacturer to show exactly what their product looks like on their website. Otherwise I consider it to be the ol' "bait and switch". This is why I'll never trust or buy ammo from companies like DT, BBA etc.
