Bugging Out

Whatever scenario you choose, the real threat will be the desperate folks with no hint of preparation other than opening their wallet to remove a credit card. You are not going to take on the military or the police. It will be the knuckleheads that badly want what you have. So, the original question was what firearm would be most useful. We all know that a good pump shotgun that will chamber almost any load is top of the list, a reliable and inexpensive pistol (think Glock), and a medium range rifle that’s accurate that ammo is easy and relatively inexpensive (think AR or SKS). Most important is knowing how to use the equipment and the size of your (army”). Remember, lethal force is only legal if your life is on the line.

I'm staying right here.Hey I'm old. Nobody is going to come and save us old people...so it's up to us...till we get taken out...but the food and ammo will be gone...even if we have to destroy it as a last act. Heck of a thought

Methinks Charles Krauthammer wrote that column with tongue firmly in cheek, the late great historian Robert Conquest noted the near unanimous agreement among historians that the 20th Century was THE worst.
Try to imagine "bugging out" in traffic that would make rush hour look like a Sunday afternoon during the Oil Embargo of 1973-74 or WWII. Power outage means no traffic lights, the gas stations couldn't pump-even if they were open, one breakdown on a crowded road , water systems knocked out....
Perpetrators breaking in...how many of us would call 911-and could they even respond ? There's the episode of the Sopranos were Janice Soprano shoots her boyfriend Richie-then calls her brother.

Well, at least Tony showed up with a Hefty bag. :D:D

If one's home is attacked, do like Prince Vlad the Impaler. Also the military doctrine that all you need to do is wound, inflict a casualty appplies. The police will be spread pretty thin, first aid squads ? Hospitals ?
One big problem I see is water supply. You can store only so many bottles.
They took Richie Aprile to Sattriale's Pork Store-makes you wonder what went
into their sausages.

I actually have 3 wells on the place. I have a solar powered pump I can use. I also have 2 gasoline powered pumps too. Water shouldn't be a problem. Food would be a bigger problem I think.Flour and sugar we keep in bulk as well as canned goods. A good 22 or 30-30 rifle is necessary for meat

My in-ground pool makes for a nice storage tank.
I think I'll be staying in, as well.

One area that was mentioned before that I'm lacking in is community with my neighbors. I've always kept to myself, and I moved to where I live now to be further isolated. I do agree that in hard times to come, a small group of neighbors will be the best bet.

Maybe I'll grab a few 30-packs and work on my manners this year.

Like many here its unlikely I would choose to bug out.

But………….

In the event of some unspecified country-wide calamity, I would likely have to mount a rescue mission of my daughter. I guess that would be “bugging away for a bit”.

The boys are armed to the teeth and would probably enjoy the apocalypse. My purple-haired daughter? Not so much.

She lives six hours away in normal driving. I’d be more concerned with fuel than guns, so at the first hint of trouble I’d be filling up jerry cans and loading them into my nondescript 1999 Explorer that looks like its not worth stealing.

It already has a pistol and a rifle in it and the basic necessities. I’d probably add my Mini-14 and a bag of magazines. I already have a printed atlas to help me get around on the back roads if necessary.

I’d probably bring Randy for company.

Would you have anyone to rescue?

Would you have anyone to rescue?

Assuming things have gone far enough South, it seems counterproductive to go and get someone, especially if there's no communication.
My sons have standing orders to get to my abode (if they want to. No wi-fi might cause them to give up). I could easily see a scenario where you're going one way, and the person you're looking for is going toward where you were!

suggestions. walkie talkie's work when the cell phones don't. never had a cell phone, used to take my wife's when i'd take a woods/ fishing break, didn't work in several areas. saved 1 of her old cell phones, keep it charged, they say even if the phone -doesn't have minutes - will still send a signal to 911 centers. in the Pittsburgh, Pa. area, i think ch. 16 is sort of emer. pickup for the corps of eng., several other govt. agency's. i'm sure someone has info on the lower channels used. i've never had to use a walkie talkie for assistance of any kind. but could of a few times. a BALL COMPASS saves time pulling out a larger one from a pocket/ pack.
