What do you use? A friend who has a gun shop gave me about 1500 or so old reloads. I don't shoot others reloads and want the just the slugs. Old powder will go in the wife's flower beds.

Because I like to reuse the components I use a kinetic (hammer ) style.
I have broken down thousands of military surplus 30-06 and a bunch of my own reloads . Never lost a bullet .
Slower than a collet puller but it will pull any caliper .

I should have specified a press mounted puller. Sorry. I have a hammer that I have been using for 20 years. Can't imagine using a hammer for that many rounds. Most I have ever done with a hammer is about 20 or so.

All jacketed bullets.

I've been using a CH Dies No. 402 collet style bullet puller. I inherited this one when my Dad passed in the 90's and he originally bought it in the mid 60's. Very good quality and they still make it along with the collets for it.

I have both hammer pullers and collet style. In 40 years have broken one hammer puller. If you have really good arms and a lot of time the hammer puller will do fine for you.

You guys are crazy to think a collet puller is faster and easier than a kinetic hammer puller.

I use a vise to strike the puller on, and use tupperware tubs to drop the powder and bullet in and another for the case.

Get a rhythm going and it goes right along..

I used a kinetic hammer but when I had to pull some 500 9MMs, I got a RCBS press mounted collet puller. Worked like a champ. Once I got a rhythm going, it took no time to go thru 500+ rounds.

If your friend loaded them and you trust him...shoot them....if they are shop miscellaneous reloads, ask him if HE would shoot them.
If no, then start pulling a few and see if they match up with any written data they might have. If they line up and are within what would be a normal loading...shoot them.
I was once given 10,000 rounds of .45 acp that was loaded on my friends Camdex. What he said they were was exactly the same. He shot them in Police matches....did I trust them? Totally....
Just MY thoughts......

"Old reloads" means just that old. No, he did not reload them. No, he won't shoot them and does not want them shot or he would bag them up and sell them. Come on he is a gun shop owner, they don't give away anything.

No written data on any of them, just dirt and tarnish.

I do trust most of my friends reloads, not all, but most.

Well then, I too would pull them, saving the casings and bullets and start over.

OK, you go break down 1,500 rounds of crimped ammo with your hammer and get back to us.

rhythm?
If I had a hammer
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening
All over this land
I'd hammer out danger
I'd hammer out a warning
I'd hammer out love between
My brothers and my sisters, ah-ah
All over this land

I think Trini Lopez is a bit old for this exercise?

I have two methods of pulling bullets first I have a Hornady collet puller. And second is what I would use is a Hornady Kinetic hammer and a 15-year old grandson. As often as he washes his sheets I don't think his arm will wear out.

I bought this one last Winter. I have used kinetic and collet pullers in the past. I had acquired several hundred 30-06, 308 and 22-250 loads that I wanted to salvage brass, bullets.
This worked perfectly, and was faster than either of my previous methods. Plus you get a nice grip, forearm workout.

I bought some .38 Special ammo that turned out to be reloads. They look like 148 gr. full wadcutters loaded flush with the case mouth and are probably swaged. Will a kinetic puller damage them regarding accuracy if I want to reuse them ? I sure can't grab them with a collet type puller.

OP - I recently purchased an RCBS 9440. I use it on a lee single stage press. Works great. Pulled 300 cartridges that were given to me and it worked perfect. I have a kinetic hammer puller as well but the RCBS wins for me.
