I am going in tomorrow morning to get a bunionectomy and hammertoe repair. Has anyone done this? I am trying to get an idea as what to expect. It will be done at an outpatient clinic. They have me using a cold water therapy unit to help with my recovery. It is sort of a small ice chest with a pump that will circulate water around my foot. The Doctor claims that it will reduce swelling and speed up healing. Has anyone used one fo these? I am off work this week and hoping to return on Monday the 28th.

The ice bucket is properly named a Polar Cube and they work well while not giving your foot a freezing sensation.

My wife had this done to both feet and all went very well. You will be 100% in a few days.

Take care.

I had the hammertoe surgery about 15 years ago. Not a big deal, little discomfort, but the toe (Little Piggy) "flops." The front of the toe is only connected to the rest of the toe by the skin so I can almost turn it completely around.

Not that I spend a lot of time doing that, and, in shoes or socks and shoes, it feels just like the others.

Poor Little Piggy.

I had mine done in 09 I wish I hadnt put it off so long. The ice cooler is great. went to Mexico 2 days after surgery. I was walking around the village we stayed in, by the ocean ,on the side of a mountain. It was a half mile from the house to the beach.Half of that was a 45 degree slope. Less discomfort than pre surgery.Wishing you a speedy recovery.Jim

I had a compound ankle fracture and ended up with a bad case of hammertoes. The doc cut a section out of each toe and then sewed the 2nd and 3rd toe together and then the 3th and little toe together. That worked for a while but the toes gradually went back into bad hammertoes so sawbones cut a notch out of the top of the toes and then bent them back and put a nail thru the toe tip so they would heal straight. That solved the problem on my middle toes but the little toe twisted under and caused problems so last summer I had it amputated. I don't miss it except when I do the chacha. :D
