Begins 27 August in the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada. It began as a very eclectic Art Festival and excuse to wander around getting stoned. Today it is a massive production and is gradually being taken over by hipsters and wealthy tourists.

It is not free to attend...Ticket prices just to get into the Event start at $425 up to $1200, and vehicle passes are $80:

I would never go myself, but I watched the Live Stream last year. On the last day they have a massive bonfire of a wooden “Burning Man” to signal the end of the Festival. I was watching last year when some stoner threw himself into the fire and died.

There is a Sheriff and Fire Dept presence, and they do what they can to enforce safety...but it’s a huge event. It’s interesting to me from a bizarro train wreck perspective...I’d watch but not my cup of tea. If you would like to watch the insanity unfold, here is the Webcast Link:

I'm undecided on that...

Maybe when I was a whole lot younger, but I can't picture myself at one of these events. Besides, being in the desert in August ain't my idea of fun. The actual 'Burning Man' figures are pretty awesome. All in all, I'd rather be shooting.

Its a bunch of San Francisco hippies worshiping false gods. Last year they had a human sacrifice. You could save a lot of money by worshiping Satan at home.

The wildest thing about it is the airport on the playa. They get a temporary designation from the FAA, have official frequencies and everything.

When I was still flying I knew a guy who went. Never made it myself, always thought it would be fun. Apparently there is a special crowd of pilots that fly in regularly to hang out. At least according to that guy, being able to offer free airplane rides can get you quite close to the ladies ;)

Locals can always tell when BM is near...........

The stores fill up with lots of WATER in every form as well as
"Trade items" that go well for this event.

The Save Mart next to Interstate 80 yesterday was a mad house !!
I had to go in due to some items needed for my Stir fry meal and realized that it was that time by all the weird types walking around.:eek: :D

PS:
yes the price is high..............

so are the Car washes, when you come back through town to rid the auto of the desert fine dust.

I have been watching their live stream since the OP. Very interesting. Watch it in the early early mornings around 3:00 AM their time. Unbelievable how they have built this little city, or whatever you call it, this week. Beware, you'll get hooked.:)

It’s like watching an Ant Farm...

I'd rather go to that Knob Creek machine gun shoot, but to each his own.

Last year they had a human sacrifice.

No, they did not.

The death of Aaron Mitchell was officially ruled a suicide by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

He eluded multiple layers of security personnel and ran into the flames, killing himself. He was only 41-years-old. He was actually rescued from the flames and taken to the hospital, but died the next day.

Now, I guess if you want to get technical, you could say he "sacrificed" himself, but since he died, no one will ever know why.

No one forced him to do it, nor was he tied down on some weird altar and cut open with stone knives and stuff, and it wasn't part of a Satanic ritual, either. It was no sacrifice initiated by other parties.

From what I understand of the Burning Man art festival/whatever, it would seem pretty obvious to me that he made himself a piece of “living art”, in the form of “self-sacrifice”, pushing the envelope of definitions and ideologies. Purposefully. To make a statement orrrr ‘DISPLAY’ Not unlike that Buddhist Monk lighting himself on fire in protest to the Vietnam war. I see little difference, just less tangible ideologies or ‘cause’.

ART

And insanity

FWIW, a lot of human sacrifices have been voluntary. That isn't anything new and it still happens in some forms.

This kind of "spectacle" wouldn't appeal to me even if it were free.
Now if it were dozens of classic rock bands, maybe....
