I was diagnosed as being diabetic in December '08, for the last month or so I've had a lot of discomfort in my mouth. A check-up at the Dentist didn't reveal any dental problems, my internist is baffled and has referred me to an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor. Researching my symptoms on-line I have found information on Burning Mouth Syndrome sometimes known as Glossodynia or Stommatodynia. My appointment with the ENT is not for a week yet, meanwhile the pain pretty much persists. Have any forum members been diagnosed with this syndrome? What treatment did your Doctor prescribe and is there any over the counter med that I can use while waiting to see the ENT?

If it is just a few spots you could try some Ora-Base with Benzocaine (available without Rx.)
If you have a family doc or dentist that can help you out, maybe he'd give you a script for Xylocaine Viscous.

Sometimes a little B complex will help with those burning sensations. I had it for a while and a good B supplement along with Vitamin C and zinc did a lot of good for *me*....YMMV

Sara, without knowing all the facts - consider:
Your post indicates a diagnosis in 12/08 and symptoms from 2/09 - did you do something different in the interim - change in diet, change in SWEETENERS? Did your doctor prescribe a new medication?
If your sugar is poorly controlled or you have received recent antibiotics do you have a yeast(thrush)which does not always have to have white exudate findings.
Others have raised the issue of vitamins, consider a supplement with B12.
Stop mouthwashes, and your current toothpaste - use Baking soda to wash your teeth

I was perscribed a product once called "Viscous Lidocaine" for a mouth problem. You gargle and spit it out and it numbs the hell out of your mouth. Call you M.D. and see if it might help. beaver.

Also consider that you being diagonsed in 12/08, presumably given a medication or diet change to restore the way the body is, and it is 03/09 this may be part of the change your body is doing with blood sugars coming back to normal (hopefully!!) You were diagonsed in 12/08 but you had to have had the diabetes for longer than that!

Even with proper blood sugars etc. it can be a very tricky problem to keep under control, with changes (small and large) all of the time.
Good Luck !

I can't dispense a dx. however if your diabetic one of the most common reasons your oral mucosa would burn is a yeast infection. Candidiasis, especially if you have been on any antibiotics. This problem is very common. Ask your doctor to give you nystatin oral solution or Diflucan 150mg for tx. and followup with EENT.
