This commercial is always on the radio that sells stars, with a special certificate!!, to people. Like if you want to buy your kid his own star and he could look in the sky and say, "that's my star!" Well, does the star seller have a deed to that star? If not, how can he sell it? Maybe a guy on another planet already bought that star for his kid. His kid can see the same star from his planet, and now this earth kid is claim jumpin' his star! A question for you lawyers here. Is there property rights precedent on this?

It's not what it sounds like. Unless things have changed, the process, which is legal and processed through the National Star Registry, does not give you a deed/title to the star. What is does though, is it gives the star your name. The star is named after you. It is legal and you get a map with all the details that tell and show you where the star is, in the heavens above. It's attractive and easily framed for display.

Back in the day, this has been going on for many, many years, my sister got one for me.

I know two people that got these as gifts. Guess what, both people got the same exact map with their star named after them. It's as close to a legal scam as you can get. The ad says it will be placed in the Registery Office in book form.

Yes it's legal... but the name is nothing official.

My father was an airline navigator early in his career. Shortly after his passing I named a star after him somewhere in Orion. Had the certificate, chart and all sent to my mother. It wasn't much money but it sure meant a lot to her.

I can sell you a gallon of water in the ocean. What ocean you ask, take your pick. I'll even give you a deed. Send me a PM and mail a check for $49.99, I'll take care of the rest. Hurry, it's almost Christmas and I'm running out of water!!!!!
Hey, you're rippin' me off! $49.99?! The sun weighs about
2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbs. and an equivalent weight star is only $19.95. What's a bucket of water weigh? Can you get me a bucket of water from the Sea Of Tranquility? I'd go for that.

Jeez, I can picture it now, someday in the distant future colonists from earth on a planet orbiting my star. One might say to another, sure is cloudy today cant hardly see Ugly Bob.

There was a guy from here in NM who sold square inches of land at a World Fair.
Yes, he owned the land. It was just West of the Taos Gorge Bridge.
Legal? I guess. I have owned one acre parcels of land in defunct subdivisions. Hard to find, in many cases. The cost to survey and mark corners would cost more than the land was worth.
So I probably don't want to look for a one inch piece.
It was supposed to be a conversation item. Don't folks have something better to talk about?

Wyatt, I feel sure it would be legal, tho I suppose you might first have to own a nation,(that has a national flag,) then somehow get said-flag planted on the star.

By the way, I own a Manatee named "Brutus", well "own" isn't quite correct. I adopted him for three years for $30 per year......I don,t know how many years he has been getting adopted, he looks about a hundred and five years old.

Somewhere around here (if my mom didn't toss it out about 60 years ago) there's a deed to one square inch of the Yukon. I'm sure it didn't cost very much, but certainly more than it's worth. I don't remember exactly where I got it, but i'm pretty sure it all started on the back of a cereal box.

So this company that sells them does so unofficially, but they keep records so you know which one is supposed to be yours? Otherwise, my thinking if how the heck do these people have the right? What's to stop me from start selling? I wouldn't. Neither would I buy...

A sweet old gal pal who worked in the Pentagon bought me one. A birthday present with map.

After Nam she managed to get my assignment at Fort Knox instead of Ft. Hood as originally assigned. Closer to home.

No telescope, never seen the star but the gal who made it all happen for me is in my constant thoughts.:D
