I am currently living in Istanbul and am looking to buy a nice shotgun from one of the stores here. They are very into firearms here, rifle, shotgun, handgun, you name it. Since I have both a residency permit and work permit, buying a gun isn't a problem.

My problem is: how do I bring a gun back into the US? I am not directly employed by the US govt., as I understand that can make things a bit easier. I have tried google-ing for an answer, but am having a hard time finding a simple answer. The gun would be returning to one of three states: Texas, Virginia or CA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to find a licensed importer, one that I know of off the top of my head is Simpson Ltd. in IL, but you shouldn't have a problem locating one closer to you. Once it is imported it can then be transferred to a FFL in local to you. As long as the firearm isn't prohibited by any state and/or federal laws, it's a fairly easy and straightforward process.

Its easy when you're already overseas, link below for ATF and and ATF Form 6 importation licences. Fill it out and mail it to ATF. When you get it back you have one year to import the gun. The importer is you when you fly back to the US. Put down your name as the importer and the airline for the carrier. Worked for me in Germany and how if I could bring something back from Iraq (ATF denied my licenses, cause its a prohbited country). If any doubt call ATF and they answer all my questions in the past. You could go the route explained above but not necessary with you overseas. I've hand carried over a dozen guns back on Form 6s, just show it to customs at port of entry. Importer/FFL if trying to get something from overseas if your already in the US.
